| chesil, 08/01/09 after a long break from the beach i was eager to get the first trip of 09 under my belt. although conditions and prospects were pretty dire. fished portland end, from about 8.30pm - 5am smorning, it was a clear frosty night with a light, but bitter, easterly wind, fishing over low water with high tide rolling in for about 7am, unfortunately the school run stopped me staying later into the morning. the sea was just too damn calm for any chance of real success at this time of year with just an oily swell lapping gently at the shingle. baits were of the 'if its' variety- ie, if its in the freezer i'll take it down, and comprised of;- 3 1/2 wraps of black lug, 2 very pink squid, and assorted fishbaits. rigs;- pennel pulley 2/0's, d-vice pennelled 2/0 3/0, 2 hook flapper/ bead n blade size 4 scratchy hooks. things were really slooooooow, with nothing doing till i resorted to the scratchy rig & missed a couple of bites b4 landing this leviathan.   poor cod, - points for moonrakers, any little specie will do for starters,  fresh baits continued to be hurled seaward optimistically despite the cold, i had what looked like the whole beach to myself & it was good to spend the night out under the stars for the 1st time in a while. things were not improveing with the flood and i was thinking of knocking it on the head earlier that planned by 2.30, but a little knock and more points encouraged me to stay on,   5 bearded rockling  , another gargantuan struggle to land this--not.maybe something better would have shown if i'd stayed on over high water but i doubt it , with the wind easterly. thing might pick up all round by sunday when the winds are s'posed to go southerly force 4ish, might catch some propper fish then like doggies  __________________ beer so many venues, so little time.     |
