budliegh monthly comp 1/10/9

last night was the good old first wed comp( god it came round quick this month)

venue the old dogfish stamping ground of budliegh

the weather had been a touch windy all day( full on westerly) but this had enough northerly in it to knock the sea down and make conditions very fishable

8 of us fished this one

5 by the steamer steps and 3 at the river mouth( where i met devon dave)

well it was looking good as i got a doggie early on( on a pop up) , then rich arrived ( this time with the crab bait[ long story best left])

poor old rich was having a mare to say the least but held it together just even though he is giving up the tabs( do or do not !!there is no try ) and he did bring the beers

rich also did far better than me with a mixed bag of pollock, pout and a brace of dogs, me well i just added a small pollock to my account

come the end it was the guys who fished steamer steps that did better with ken comeing fiurst and a big well done to rich who managed 3rd

all weighed in but nothing spectacular with dogs, pollock and pout( no bass )

next month we are at beer( the town not the drink )

dave

Re: budliegh monthly comp 1/10/9

i may have caught more than 1 pollock if i used smaller baits

not much in the sea that would tackle the whole bluey i had on one rod!!!

and fair play to the mighty pollock who took whole squid on the other rod!!

Re: budliegh monthly comp 1/10/9

A nightmare session that I somehow managed to scrape a third place from. I still not quite sure how... I actually turned up on time and everything, before remembering I'd left the only bait I was responsible for in the fridge at home. Arse. Turned round and fetched the crabs. Got to the beach again and found said crabs in a baaaaad way. Double arse. Now half an hour late for the comp, I rush down to the water and set up the first rod. Started to setup second rod when the first rod went over in the stand, but luckily landed on my left shoulder. Slight pain in shoulder, but an un-damaged rod. Bonus! Rain started. Went about setting up the shelter. Half way through heard sickening crash as rod slammed in the Budleigh pebbles. 6 out of 8 rings now require attention. Much swearing as I introduce myself to DevonDave for the first time. (Sorry mate, I'm not normally that grumpy. Honest.) Thinking I'm now down to one rod in the comp, Dave (Of the non feathered variety) comes to the rescue and provides a spare rod. Dave your are a proper gent, and a bit of a life saver. Of course, the borrowed rod then procedes to catch all the fish. 3 doggies, a pollack and couple of pout. A fairly sorry haul, but as it turns out slightly less sorry than almost everyone else. Proof indeed that fishing sometimes works in very mysterious ways. Big thanks to DevonDave for the loan. We'll have to sort out a less stressed session soon mate. Lessons learnt. 1. If you get away with the rods going over once, for gods sake make sure the rest is then made stable. 2. If you are subsequently forced down to one rod, ensure you're fishing next to a particulaly generous forum member. 3. The second you put the buddy up, you can put your house on it not raining again for the rest of the night.
