Noob at Hayling

Hi all,

Have just started sea fishing a few months ago and have lots to learn. Reading the posts here has certainly helped. I've been trying the Eastoke end of Hayling with mixed fortunes.

Fished all morning today with my 2 sons. Nothing on feathers/lures early on (but it was low tide and a bit choppy). Then it got windier and more weed appeared.

Caught a 1lb bass on a sandeel bait but didn't know it was on until I saw it amongst the weed on a retrieve.

Then just before leaving, this cute little fellow:

I'm guessing it's a baby plaice going by the red spots??? Caught with ragworm on a Pennel rig. Are these common at this location?

Does anyone have any tips for fishing when it's choppy, windy and weedy? I'm too impatient (and English) to wait for good weather. I think I need to start with a decent tripod as my sand spike was wobbling all over the place.

Thanks in advance.

Nice one matey , you need to hit hayling , eastoke or los this weekend after all this bad weather , limpet and mackeral side for bait ,(there should be plenty of limpet washed up) cast just past the surf 20 - 30 yrds out , should miss the weed and fingers crossed for some nice bass ,

lee.

Sounds like a plan, thanks. Off to check tide and weather reports. Just got a new tripod so need to try it out.

Tripod is an very goog place to start. I would diffenly go for an Ian Golds supermatch. not the cheeps on the marikr but diffly the best my one is over 15 years old and is still going storg. With high winds use an wide leg base thus make the hole thing more stable , rod tips are lower and bites easiers to see. wane its weedy you need to keep as much lines as possible out of the water, this can be done by moving the butt cups up the tripod about half way normal work you can go higher but keep the reels below the top of the tripod because the rods will easly fall out. If it very weedy set the tripod up at an stape angle so back leg is at round 70-80degres and push down well in the beach, part fill an bag with stones or snad and hag it fron the hock on the main leg ( also handy in high winds ) than move cups up abour half way thus give max high above the weed.

Keep casting lower than normal, this done by releaseing the line an little bit later than normal, also an 170g - 210g lead can some times punche though the wind easyer than 130g - 150g leads.

Hope this helps.

Some great advice there, many thanks.

Hope to get down to the beach this weekend to try it out.
