| Shoreham Harbour - 14th August 08 Flying Fox and Myself decided to have ago on Shoreham Harbour's West Arm yesterday evening with the aim of catching a codling or two. The water was still reasonably dirty after the recent bad weather of late but the sea was dead flat. We decided to have a small bet of £2 on who could catch the most (or a) codling. In the first few hours all we caught were tiny little bass and annoying eels. We were using lugworms at the time which the little fish were stripping within minutes. Once it got dark the bites slowed up for a while, a friend who was fishing next to us went home and gave us some frozen black lug. Decided to use both hooks with the blacks and after a while I had a reasonable bite and a slack line. After a good little fight I managed to make it 3 trips in a row this week in which I caught a codling. Not a very good pic as someone turned their headlamp on when the phone was about to flash to take the pic . ![]() The fish was quickly returned and almost straight away Ollie had a bite and was struggling with a fish, it was smoothound probably just sizable which he caught on a few crab legs he found on the floor. Next chuck I had another eel and Ollie managed to catch his first sole of the year of 32cm ..... he took a picture of it and will put it on here when he returns from his camping trip this weekend. More species points Ollie won on amount of fish (3 more fish ? ) but lost the £2 competiton as he didnt manage a codling. |

| Re: Shoreham Harbour - 14th August 08 Normally the occasional one shows late August , then numbers increase in September and October then by November time they seem to vanish once the plagues of whiting arrive. Have to admit this year there seems to be more codling arriving earlier than normal .... strange thing also is the local netters dont seem to be catching any .... odd that unless the codling are right inshore ? |
