| portland- the report. i was really keen to got going and so arrived at 0400 for a dawn start . the wind was a brisk southerly which was throwing a moderate swell against the point and western ledges , high tide was for about 8am. at this point baitwise i only had a pack of froze sandeel + a selection of lures and so with the swell in mind i set about trying to spin up a fresh mackerel or what ever. here's a few picc's- east of the light house. the red crane. and a ledge further round. over all i spent about 2 frustrateing hours with out a touch , the only sign of life i'd seem was a seal that i surprized lurking in one of the little coves, there was quite a bit of loose weed drifting about so only 1 in 3 casts came back without the lure being fouled. boredom set in and i decided to make a move , fortunately i hadn't loaded up the carpark machine due to lack of change earlier.i wandered down to church ope cove about 7am and it looked good from the cliff top. view left- and view back up the cliff to the old castle- again there was weed in the surf line which hampered any form of spinning and so after a few half harted casts covering the whole beach i launched out a flapper with some sandeel and sat back to wait for a bite. i lost the flapper to the reef and continued with a pennel pulley through high water at which as it usually does here for some reason the surf picks right up and started to throw the weed onto my line . (deepest apologys to the odd dog walker who had to endure my foul language while keep cleaning it off) by 10am the tide had turned and the surf dropped again, i spent about another hour fruitlessly drowning sandeel being short of bait i trudged forlornly back up the cliff thoroughly p*ssed off with it. after a bit o scran and a quick visit to dennings, armed with some squid and rag i renewed my assault on all things fishy at chesil cove. the tide was dropping and the huge rafts of weed and debris had started to float off towards ferry bridge to plague the anglers up there. weed/pallets/ trees / barrels in fact just about everything thats been washed into or thrown over the side in lyme bay ends up here after some rough weather. rigs used were- pulleys & multi pulleys, & a flowing trace in close on the spinning rod the ebb was biteless but as the tide started to flood my baits trarted to get chewed up and i even had a bite or two. after getting a bit of kip & sunburnt i managed to land the first fish of the day, an eel....now you all hear tell of the monster conger that roam the chesil.. - - - - - - - - - - - -- -- ----this wasn't one of them ![]() to catch one smaller i'd have to fish the sargasso sea. another one followed shortly afterwards then finaly some specie points with a ballan wrasse just as the weed rafts floated back from the west at this point i left for yet another venue- couldn't find the stone pier, saundersfoot& bowleaze cove were covered in bathers so i went home, 13 hours fishing - 3 fishlets __________________ beer so many venues, so little time. |
