Selsey - Friday 4th July

Flying Fox and myself had ago on the West Beach at Selsey, initially to try and catch a tope and if they didnt show up a few hounds would do.

In the first couple of hours we had no bites at all and the baits were coming back untouched. There was no weed at all which made a nice change . Wind was blowing from the south east and it ocassionally rained.

After a while gave up with chucking out whole sides of mackerel and decided to fish for hounds with frozen spider crabs to try and avoid the blank.

It took about hour to get the first proper bite and after a good fight the first fish was landed, weighed and pictured and then released.

It was a starry hound of 7lb 9oz.

Then managed to miss two hound takes in a row before landing another hound this time of 8lb 1oz. Next chuck had one of the virtually the same size. Missed another couple of bites before I then had one of 9lb 3oz. Odd thing was the fish all seemed to be starry hounds and seemed to be getting bigger and bigger.

As we almost ran out of bait we decided to have a couple more casts when i then caught my biggest hound of the night this time of 12lb 3oz

Rain started to get worse so we finally gave up just before high tide. All fish were starry hounds and all were returned alive.

Does seem very odd that every year West Sussex and Hampshire beaches has very good numbers of smoothounds and plenty of which are a very good size .... not complaining though
