Talking The Smutless meet 2008

Or maybe

The Longest day

Selsey unsmut fest 2008

Well the time had come
Fridge was buldgeing with crab and other goodies, Baggies car was packed and he was on my doorstep for allotted 8.30( well done the man)

Unfortunately after only having got to bed myself just before 6 and only 2 hours sleep day before I was snoreing but 20 mins later I was finishing loading the car with him and we hit the road at 9, game on selsey here we come

After an uneventfull journey( despite the “pink” CD incident ) we get to pub for 12.30 where we meet the regular band and neil, (a real pleasure to meet you at last clap)

A quick look at the west beach and decide the weed is horrendous but we found something for claudias birthday

Soon we were gathered on the east beach near this plaque should be renamed smoothound deserted island disks and ready for action

Despite some serious weed still most were soon into catching the bream, Tj first with a treble shot, then Ian started his breamfest

Unfortunately baggie and myself seemed to be in the groin of doom, and we just couldn’t buy a bite
but rich was makeing the best of it still

Ian decided that bream were going to be my ruffe and enjoyed calling to me everytime he caught
Claudia decided it was cake time and hacked it up so tastefully on the beach, thanks my dear

Now suitable refreshed, and after some mucking about casting practice with john and rob who had turned up, and impromptu coaching for Claudia, who was doing well come the end clap
It was time to start fishing /wasteing bait again

It was getting dark but decided still had to try 1 rod for a bream and eventually from under a pile of weed came this massive specimen

A blankbuster and points

Darkness fell and crab was now the order of the day

But the smuts just weren’t playing
Tj managed a small bass

Most people caught some sleep where they could

But Claudia decided breakfast bbq would be at 2.30 am , hit the spot though my dear

God knows why I was awake but I was so fished hard still hoping for a hound

About 4.30am others awoke and the bream were still about, thanks for letting us know ian ,
Tj then found a rig he had lost on the groin the night before and also a nice 3lb bass

Mmm not sure long lineing is really allowed mate

I scratched another small bream, then on last cast with ½ a ragworm as dropping shelter I had a bass myself

But it was a unanimous decision and this years smut comp winner was /is TYSON

Well done mate well deserved

A good but tireing journey home, ( Tj how many oranges did you eat on route ) Thanks baggie you’re a star for driving

Got in almost exactly 24hours later at 9am

And have slept like a baby all day

so now I’m awake again I'm of for a pint or 6

thanks for organising again ian

great to meet everyone again as ever
next meet lets not name the fish we are trying to catch as we always fail when we do
catfish meet, smoothound meet, zander meet etc

Re: The Smutless meet 2008

Despite being "pegged" next to Twiddles, my first cast of 17.2 yards resulted in two stripey things that are allegedly called bream. So, happy to have avoided the blank, I continued the titanic struggle to get the specially bred, aggressive little blighters called ragworm on to the "how big?" hook .

A couple more bream followed and I must say, it was touch and go as they fought pretty well on the 40lb/50lb gear! I was quite enjoying myself as I had a total of seven (yes, count them, SEVEN) of these very obliging specimens but then some joker pulled the plug and the water disappeared before my very eyes! My "swim" was very soon dry shingle and not suprisingly devoid of fish (took me three casts to realise this!).

One of the highlights, in addition to the Ginger Wine, was my 10 minute battle, in the darkness, with an incredible specimen. The rod was hooped over and tested to the maximum, even taking line at several points. I was just about to shout for help when doubt set in! A monstrous boulder had grabbed the poor mutilated and elasticated crab and fought one hell of a fight.

Being serious, I enjoyed my trip to the Dark Side and more so the company. Thanks to all, particularly for the loan of the gear and the speedy education in "one up, one down", "pulley rigs", "pennels" and such like. It's a weird world you live in, but so many similarities to "proper" fishing!!

Re: The Smutless meet 2008

Well done to TJ for winning the cub and well deserved too. He was fishing to the left of me and I watched him putting a huge amount of effort in to his fishing.....constantly fighting with the weed on his line, re-baiting every 10 mins or so.

Well done mate

I also would like to thanks Dave for my lovely b/dy cake, a yummy carrot cake with all the icing and trimming, it was very delicious.

I still got the bottle of bubbly from Neil to get through but I'm sure I will a suitable reason to open it

Ohh almost forgot....Neil done darn right good at the sea fishing palava and managed to catch a few bream, picci to follow tomorrow, off to bed in a minute, need to catch up on a couple of hours sleep.

Birthday Girl Twiddles

Neil (Catfish Virgin) thinking, there go's my chance of a peice of cake.

Pingu & Baggie still waiting for a Bream

Here's what they look like Dave!!!

Bananna steve, wonders why every one get's so excited about Smutts? What Smutt's???

T.J. With a nice Bass

Another great meet. Shame the Smoothounds did'nt show, but it was great to meet everyone again & at least some fish were caught. Species caught were: Bass, Black Bream, Red Mullet, Eel's & Pout. My only down side was snapping the top 4" off my favourite ABU Atlantic Zoom Beachcaster. Such is life. Thank's to all those who attended again & who continue to make this such a cracking event. Hopefully see you all again next year.

Re: The Smutless meet 2008

realised when got home and threw my fat ass into bed that the reason I didnt catch any smuts was that i had had my lucky homer simpson boxers on inside out all day
( blame the speed that i got up in, re beginning of report )

also sure came away with more rubbish than i made from the beach but i did leave the weed behind
