Question town quay strange

went town quay last sunday all started very slow.mainly cos the the i.o.w ferry was messing around were i was fishing..the nite carried on poorly so gave it 1 last cast nothing happend for bout 20mins then a few little pout knocks wich stopped a minute later..deciding to bring it in felt sum wate(thinking spider crab again) as it reached the surface i could see a small pout and a good size sole(stange as only had 1 hook on) the sole then fell off an swam away(bugger)then i noticed a strange thing the pout hooked in bottom lip but was missing top of its head back to his top fin eyes and all..it wasnt from crabs as the bite was clean.thinking large bass or maybe a smut.(if anybody got any other theorys)..so im off back to town quay tonite to try for whatever ate my pout....

Re: town quay strange

simple ......crab,bass don't go around gnawing lumps off,if it had been a bass it would have hit the pout with some force, although i've had hounds on mackerel and squid bait...again doubtful if the fish could bite a chunk out of the fish, spider crab on the other hand can reduce a pout to nowt in no time, and when they get the chance they normally attack the head of live fish first in order to disable it
only other thing would be a mud crab(cuttle fish)but this would normally take and move off, would also leave marks along the flank
