Seaton 01/06/08

After recent trips to Seaton had been fairly fruitful, I arranged to take the brother-in-law and another member of extended family down to try for their first smuts on Sunday night, along of course with the Pingmeister.

We got to the beach for just after 8pm and immediately set about spinning for a couple of mackerel for bait.

The water was almost without surf and the weather had been warm during the day yet overcast, so there should have been a fair chance of a few, yet after after nearly an hours spinning, the B.I.L. had had one and I'd lost one. Ah well, not really the target anyway, so I packed in spinning and wondered back up the beach to greet the recently arrived TJ and to show those that required it how to bait up a crab and sort out shock leader etc.

TJ selected his shirt to match the sunburn!

Having done my bit of show and tell, I set about sorting my own gear out whilst everyone else (Including TJ on my rod! ) laid into the now boiling sea of mackie. The fish were coming ashore at will, with a rogue Pollock for Rich2 breaking the near constant stream of mackie. Of course I missed out on the fun as I was sat in the gloom trying to tie a pair of pulley rigs ready for the main event. (I must add that only what was required was taken, the rest of the fish were returned without being handled. Well done guys. )

It was getting really quite late when I finally got a pair of baits in the water. Both rods were on prime Devon peeler and we sat back a waited to see what happened. About an hour later, I had wondered over to the B.I.L. for a chat, when Dave noticed a nod in my rod and moments later I was into the first smut of the night. Nothing more than a pup, but at least they were out there.

The first fish was closely followed by another, this time for TJ, again not a monster but his first smut so a PB and a taste of what these awesome fish can go like. Well done mate.

TJ's first Smut.

I was next in with another couple of fish, the second going to 3lb 12oz (Which must have been slack for a good few mins, a touch jammy as Dave pointed out several times!), closely followed by a couple for Dave which broke a series of disappointing sessions, so again another welcome couple of fish. Well done mate.

This one may have been a bit fortunate

You'd think Dave would have woken up a bit by now...

I was in again after that with two fish in rapid succession, followed by a last cast pup for Rich2, another first smut and PB. Well done mate, we'll be back for it's mum soon eh?

For gauds sake man, WIND like hell

First smut for Rich2. Well done mate

And that was it, final counts were myself with 5, Dave had a brace, TJ had his first and Rich2 broke his duck as well. Well done gents, especially those first smuts. Gotta love them fish eh? B.I.L. didn't get one this time, but had a doggie and a few pout to break the blank. Next time mate.

All in all a cracking night in good company, but I was pleased to get back and hit the sack come 1:45am!

Lessons Learnt
--------------

1. Just because you're catching fish, doesn't mean that the sunburn won't get ya!
2. Waders are a good idea for returning fish, but not such a good idea when you're wearing shorts.
3. Having failed to catch on your spinning rod, don't then lend it to anybody. They're bound to have all sorts of fun whilst you're stuck doing mundane cr*p. Grrr.

Re: Seaton 01/06/08

was a cracking night there
but i just dont know how rich does it
me well i lost/missed quite a few bites either by being dozy or missing slackliners
rich ( mr golden orbs) ignores his rods and casually picks up line thats probably been slack 5 minutes and the fish are still attatched ( i'm only jealous, well done mate)

and as for the broken radiator on my car( as i discovered yesterday)when i added to the already roadkill strewn devon roads well thats another story
