Hi Ian.

You have got it all wrong. Sorry mate!

Chesil beach is regarded as one of the best fishing venues in the UK. It is! But to be able to fish all its 18 miles you need to know where and when it fishes best.

Firstly, early June is a not a great month to fish the beach. You are still likely to be plagued with May water. The annual algae bloom.
Secondly a lot of the summer species that many other south coast marks are renowned for do not move onto Chesil until later.

Most importantly, Burton Bradstock is one of the worst sections of the beach. You are likely to get Bass on it and if you are lucky the odd plaice or Dab. Obviously you will get Mackerel if you can cast more than a 100m.

If you want Gurnard you need to head to the Portland end. June is a brilliant month for Sole, even during the day, but you need to go to Cogden.

Scad only come onto the beach at dusk, but you wont see them until July and August. Garfish don't normally show until the end of June and once again the Portland end would be better.

In all honesty I would avoid Burton Bradstock. Head down to Chesil cove during the day. You will pick up some Wrasse and hopefully some Garfish. You might get lucky and get a dab as well. Later on head towards Chesil Beach car park, around 6pm. You will have a very good chance of a Gurnard or two and once the sun sets, you will get doggies, pout and poor cod and if you are lucky a smut.

Leave it two more weeks and the world is your oyster on Chesil! Just about every species you can imagine, but they are not all in the one place. 18 miles of beach takes about 18 years of knowledge :-) I don't have that knowledge yet :-(

Thanks for the info Sean. I have had good days at Burton Bradstock in the past, although admittedly later in the year.
I was a bit limited as to where to fish yesterday. Origionally we had planned to fish Cogden, however I had hurt my back at work on Thursday & needed to fish somewhere with easy parking & a short walk. Burton Bradstock fitted these criteria.

Re: Chesil next Saturday

You don't want to go for Cogden with a bad back. I take it you still have to park at the top and hike down? Nasty!

You are right about Burton Bradstock being a good venue later in the year.
