Very late report - 07/05/08

Having just managed to download the pictures from my camera, it would appear that I've missed a couple of sessions out of late so a quick catch up.

Fish a monthly comp at Jacobs at the start of the month. 15 fished but it was flippin hard work. Of the 15, 9 caught, mostly mackies and only 4 dogs.

Winner was Ade Jones (Again) with an impressive (for the night) haul of a couple of dogs, a pair of mack and a rockling. Yours truly was feeling as rough as a badgers and was wrapped up in full thermals and floaty whilst everyone else was in T-Shirts. Did manage one nasty 'orrible eel before the weigh in, which is points I guess, but not really what I was looking for in the comp.

Just one of those nights... Jacobs hasn't fished that well lately, and this result just confirms that. Hopefully the ray will be in soon...

'Orrible eel

The Sunday prior to this I managed a rare day time pass to go fluff chucking at a beautiful reservoir on Dartmoor called Kennick. I was to go with a good friend of mine who is fly fishing crazy. We turned up for 9am to be greeted with blazing sunshine and a cycle race round the lake. Not ideal conditions and so it proved to be.

The fish were there in numbers, jumping and swirling often, but due to the bright sunshine (So I was told) they were sticking to the deeper parts of the lake, typically well out of my casting range.

It took me a while to get the hang of casting again, but once I'd got it back I set about hooking trees, grass, my rucksack and myself with gusto. There really was no stopping me.

Due to my friend’s far superior technique (Which he took great joy in showing me, again and again and again.) He did manage three decent trout, all at extreme range, where as I didn't even get so much as a swirl. Such is life.

It was a great day, hot and sunny which wasn't good for the fishing, but the setting more than made up for it and doubtless I'll be back before the end of the summer. I could even quite get into this weightless fishing lark.

Fish were being caught, just not by me.

Lessons learnt.

1. 'Orrible eels are 'orrible, but at least you get points for them on here.
2. Sunglasses are a vital bit of kit for newbie fluff chuckers.
3. Thou shalt not drop you camera on its LCD screen. They don't like it at all.

Not easy that fluff chucking business is it!? I didn't get the hang of it neither, nearly had my mates eye out lol

Baggie......as the fly for bass is a bit slow at the moment, I also ventured to Kennick on Monday. Caught my bag of 6 fish, if only the bass fishing were that good.

Nice one BW. The fish were most definately there. The damned things were topping left right and centre. It's just that they were all out of my casting range. REALLY frustrating.
