The irony of Species hunts (or not)

Had a day out with Greg on Southern Star on Sat 10th. "Just a few bream" was the target - and we expected some Ballans also.

Over to Christchurch Ledge, where we went species hunting last year and where we had fished our socks off with a variety of methods and rigs to muster just four species (bream, ballan, poor cod and bass)

This year we were targetting bream all the time with special bream rigs - not really trying to catch different species - and finished up with NINE species (Black bream, Ballan wrasse, Goldsinny wrasse, pout, poor cod, mackerel, garfish (stacks of gars - if you didn't hook a bream and retrieved your bait you got a gar on the way up), a tompot blenny and the usual selection of doggies.

Its a funny old game, but at least Certhia topped her personal best Black Bream at 3 lb 2 oz.

We had enough bream to make Black Bream Ceviche on the boat (Gareth had brought a quantity of lemons, limes, onions, chillies and other spices)so all five stuffed ourselves with that, and there was still enough for lunch today. As a change, for dinner tonight, we have had grilled bream fillets!

For those of you who would like to try ceviche

Any or all of those recipes are truly delicious

Good going guys. Always seems to be the way. I'm sure if Greenheart ever drops out of the species hunt, he may well catch a Ruffe......

that's a fair haul of points and a rather nice looking recipe, a good day i'd say.
