| Rodney bay 17/04 What with Pingu away for the week doing some health farm\detox week thing , I had to venture out for Wednesday night fishing on my own this week. I must admit I was a bit slack without those "Ready to go mate?" "You running late again?" texts prompting me to get my arse in gear. So slack in fact that by the time I'd got my stuff together it was Thurday night fishing. Ah well. Of course I forgot to take the camera (That's Ping's job as well you see..) so I'm sorry for the lack of photo's of rods on the beach, but I'm sure you've seen them all before anyway! Rodney 17/04 20:30 - 00:45 Low tide : 00:40 Weather: Minimal cloud cover, absolutely howling Easterly. Bright moon. Coldish. Rigs/Baits: 2 'ook flapper with Lug on size 1's and deed crab on 3/0 pulleys. I drove down via the sea front and was greeted with a fairly heavy sea. The plan was to tuck up tight against Orcombe point and try and get out of the wind, which I have to say, worked well for the first half hour as I was well tucked away so I got myself sorted out and started fishing. What I'd not factored in however, was the speed the sea moved down the beach. Before long the tide had receded past the point and getting to the waters edge meant sticking you head out into the gale blowing from your left and walking 40 yards away from the shelter of the point to cast. Now I could very well have moved the rods nearer to the waters edge, but having lived down south for so long I've have become soft and so decided to stay put and leave a good length of line out instead. Obviously, this made bite detection niegh on impossible so I spent the next couple of hours wondering to myself, "was that nod out of sync?" and generally fishing badly. It goes without saying that I had a steady stream of absolutely no bites what-so-ever, so come 23:30 I'd decided enough was enough, it was time to show my support for the local kebab house. On reeling in the in the lug rod I thought I felt a slight resistance and was pleased to see a blank busting pout emerge from the surf. Only this pout wasn't a pout at all you see. Oh no that would have made things too easy. If it had been a pout I'd have thought "Ah well, not a blank, but still time to go home." No this pout was actually one of the smallest Bass you've ever seen. Small maybe, but my first of the year so it was enough to give me that little bit of encouragement and I decided to fish on for another fishless hour.![]() All in all a ropey old nights fishing, tempered by the capture of this years first (admittedly small) Bass, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.
