lee on solent report.

with thurday being fishing day this week i stuck my head in the local tackle shop ( wests of trowbridge) to have a natter and get some bait.
after a chat about last weeks dogfest at burton and mentioning that i could get no rag last week , the shop keeper handed me some ragworm that he had spare and couldn't use, top man .
this made me decide on lee on solent instead of hordle, which were the options i'd planned on .
armed with some rag i set off early ( via mums house, they were out. and the pub they were open)
Arriveing somewhen after 2pm at high water.

conditions looked good and the first plan was to cast my wishbones out onto a sand patch in search of whatever, hopeing for a stray plaice.
the afternoon passed uneventfully in the chill light s/w breeze i fished at all distances but couldn't buy a bite.
By about 6.30 pm the tide had dropped away and i realised that i'd been fishing smack on top of the shingle bar and not to the right of it as i'd planned.
so i left to grab some scran, returning to scoff it and watch the last of the ebb.
dusk was approaching and so with loads of bait still i took a rod out on to the shingle bar to fish low water for an hour or so, i had a few knocks but couldn't get a hook up . it was bloody exposed & cold out there and so i returned to set up my beach buddy for the night at the high water mark b4 the tide pushed me off the bar.
the early flood was again uneventfull and i had to wait till the water was up to the end of the groynes before the bites started again, they were few and far between and i still couldn't hook em.

and so it continued- by 1 am i'd lost my pennel pulley, couldn't b arsed to tie up another, and had resorted to scratching with a 2 hook flapper and a 2 hook clippeddown rig, determined not to blank i changed some blunt hooks on the flapper and down sizes to 2's hopeing to nail at least 1 pout b4 morning.

1/2 hour later and i was knackered, a small rattle was developing on the flapper rod but i just couldn't be bothered and left the new sharp hooks to do the biz with the bait robbing pout,

though i instantly became alert when the rod slammed around, up and out of the buddy like a jackrabbit , a gentle strike and i'm in, to a real dead weight mindful of the hook size i backed off the clutch a little.
the beast made a few aimless slow runs which definately wern't a bass and didn't feel like a smut.

a short battle of wills left me lifting a pb thornback from the waves

weighed at 9 1/2 lb.........woo hoo

and she was returned.

on that high point though i was awake again it was bound to go down hill with just a handfull of pouting before i quit at 5am.
