chesil 22/3/08. right place ,right time, wrong bait.

it was the last chance to fish dureing this weeks break from work and i was doing my usual surf around the sites to see whats happening where in order to match conditions to venue when i saw a post from john who was off to chesil.
hmmm, high tide 7am- winds gusting 30mph+ forcast but from the north
should be ok as it hadn't been blowing from the s/w for long b4 the wind swung around.
so off i set at 430 am with just the left over bait from T/Q coz thats all i had which was my biggest mistake.
i met up with john who had picked his spot and was already fishing
then set up , as predicted the sea was coloured but only a little choppy despite the wind howling across the shingle from the north north west.
first cast yealded a double shot of pout n a dog for me (not a blank)

we fished away for a bit with both of us catching the odd pout n dog, i looked across at some point and saw john landing somthing else and so wandered across and gave a hand unhooking a school bass, and remarked 'took your bivvy down then,?'
unfortunately the wind had gotten the better of it and and it was currently languishing somewhere at sea between here and portland.

the day wore on and just the occasional pout or doggie broke the peace till i saw john make an impressive dive for a fish that was slideing back down the slope after sheding the hook on the beach , it can't be another dog to match the one on his top snood i thought ,
and sure enough he reapeared over the bank with the biggest plaice i'd ever seen caught, which made me eat my earlier remark about plaice not being likely with the water coloured like it was.

next i had to make a simalar dive to catch my bivvy as it sailed past my ear, -success, caught mine, but had to spend a while collecting my scattered kit and resiteing bivvy.
with all now secure i settled down to watch my rods and fell asleep, to be woken by john who came over for a natter to say that both he and the guy fishing the other side of him had had a flattie each.

i used the last of my worm baits in a last ditch effort to get a spotty on one rod while continueing with fishnsquid on the other a light pull down and a few sml nodds on the fishnsquid baited rod grabbed my attention- not likely to be a plaice,- didn't look like a doggie or pout

i gave it a little while before strikeing and retrieving to find i'd caught a SHARK!, not a mamby pamby gummy doggy or smut but a real shark with teeth.
carefully i prized my size 2 hook with its squid and sprat cocktail free from its jaws (before it choked)

spurdog, well.......pup.

by now it was low water and the colour had dropped right out of it till it had nearly cleared plus it was now flat calm.

most deffinately a lucky day for my mate coz as the tide started to flood his bivvy washed up about 60yards down the beach.then of course he caught another spotty on the flood.

kindly, john left me the last of his bait as he left, giving me a last chance at spottys b4 the light went , out they went and were left as i packed away .
when i eventually had to go i found i had caught a fine brace of................................................ .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .......................................poorcod.
well if you can't catch them your self the next best thing is to watch someone else do well ,
cheers john.
