Dover Breakwater 14/3/8

Fished an invitational match on the Breakwater yesterday - great venue and has to be fished at least once by everyone on this forum - a future meet maybe

After a silly 3am start to beat the traffic/roadworks/Operation Stack - I have never seen so many lorries in one place - the queue of lorries on the way home strectched 15 miles ... must have been over 1000 trucks ! - so anyway 6 am arrival for brekkie to catch the boat out to the breakwater.

Pegs drawn - a new points system in use which was confusing to say the least but all I had to do was catch fish and they would work out the points.

Lovely still warm day, broke into glorious sunshine all day - better than the non stop drizzle last year - so much sun - I got quite burnt
Fishing, not brilliant insomuch as big fish, it did turn into a Pout & Whiting bash rather than a specimum hunt and to be honest, having come all that way and all that dosh - I didnt fancy spending all day on the inner wall catching Pout which I could do at home (The breakwater has pegs marked all along with an outer wall facing France and an inner wall in the harbour and you can fish either - the inner having all the micro fish) and that is what most chose to do - all the local Kent lads were on the inner wall but I decided I wanted BIG fish so perservered on the outer wall with big hooks !

Ended up with lots of nice size Pout, some lovely big Dogfish and apparently an extremely rare Rockling ... rarely caught from the breakwater so pleased to earn an extra 10 points for a different species !

Also caught a load of Whiting but every single one was 25,26cm and the limit was 27cm so did not count for a species or in the points tally others than 1 point per fish (NFSA minimum sizes limits applied) - very frustrating.

My best fish was this 60+ cm dogfish - about 2 1/2 lb - a PB for me .....

Yellow tails were definatley bait of the day but my supply ran out half way so had to rely on rag which was not so effective .... nothing on plain squid either.

Fish of the comp was a huge Cod - my mate (our driver !) was on the end peg and I heard him scream like a kid with a new bike "The net the net" asking for the drop net - brought in this lovely 8 1/2lb Cod - biggest one I have ever seen caught - it was huge - really fat and would ypou beleive caught on a pompey rig on the bottom size 1 hook - just goes to show !

Winner had 33 sizeable and 12 undersize fish - just 2 species so he had a Pout/Whiting bash .... sorry but very boring !

Interestingly, with the points system, the 8lb Cod earned just the same points as just 6 Pout weighing maybe 2lb and my 4 Dogfish weighing probably 8lb again cancelled out by 6 or 7 pout .... cant say I like this points system ...

Came home with a bottle of Bacardi as a small prize quickly snaffled by the missus for letting me go so an early night for me then

Well, all done and headed home for some sleep - The night before I stayed up till my lift arrived watching the cricket so not slept for about 36 hrs .... mad ...

well done rob, that is the beauty of the breakwater , surprises come up often,
i have seen 50lb conger on there , 15lb bass and 28lb cod and heard of a double figure ray off there recently,
with such deep water you never know what might turn up

The local lads were all talking of a 15lb (I think ?) Thornback off there last week - hence my big hooks !

That 50lb Conger would have been fun !
