Eastney - the lull before the storm ...

... quite literally .... the wind hit with a vengance as I left ...

Fished Eastney tonight 2030 - 0030 HW 0044
Lovely clear night to start with - freezing cold, followed by overcast & a really cold wind, followed by heavy rain, followed by strong winds ...

Not sure what to expect really, sea was dead calm to start and a surf really whipped up towards the end of the night ...

Fishing first - had a few Whiting, Pout, probably a Poor Cod & Rockling ... nothing too exciting - no bass despite one rod close in all night with limpet/squid ...

The scary stuff - pitched camp about 10 yards from the HW mark or where I thought it would come and watched as the tide crept up the shingle - one or two biggish waves breached the top of the small bank where I was but felt quite confident the waves wouldnt reach me - then out of no-where a huge swell swamped me & everything ..... didnt know which way to turn - tackle box, bucket, bait bag but decided on the rod bag as it was merrily sailing off towards the Isle of Wight - beat a hasty retreat right back - first time I have ever gotten swamped like that - scary stuff .... all respect to Mother nature

Well done on braving the weather and getting a result. Sounds like you did a Pompey and were quite lucky last night

Nice one Mate. Really makes you think about the sheer power of the water when you get caught up like that. Glad you're still here to tell the tail...

It's funny how quickly you can do the maths in your head when something like that happens. Rods first, then reels, followed by all the other stuff I guess. Yet when I'm stood in the tackle shop, it takes me ages to decide what I can afford and how much this or that will cost... Mind you, nine times out of ten I buy the stuff anyway!

Did you actually lose any gear?

No - I was okay thanks ... probably only 12" deep but it all floated !

It is amazing after the event - I think you are right - grab the rods & reels off the tripod first ....
