Red face beginning to doubt my sanity, Pings long long weekend

ok get a coffee /beer and have a wee before reading this is a long one

well this weekend was always play by ear with forcasts of doom and gloom from weather men etc, but i really wanted to get some proper fish and points( really should know better know at end of feb/early march)

Fri eve was a tad blustery but i had got an early pass to go pikeing(ok i know this is sea section but give it a chance and you already know outcome but fits into the sanity section of post) went up to the canal at the lime kilns for just before 4, wanted to walk round bend to boats but wind killed that idea so it was unfortunately main bank again, where was actually completely sheltered
water level is being mucked about again and was a good 2ft down

well i gave it till 8 when decided really werent going to happen and went home, then had to pop out for milk so made it home 11.30/12ish after finding pub next door

saturday off to work 7 car fully loaded thinking of chesil straight after work in eve, loads of debris on road from wind night before , all day i was watching lyme bay and it looked lovely, fancied chesil but never like sat night as hammered so wher to go

now why is it sometimes text messages transfer in seconmds sometimes take hours, thus it was i didnt connect to baggie till after work and most of way home and found myself trying several destinations, branscombe(another story here) sidmouth harbour end and eventually we meet up at good old jacobs again, fishing was not too exciting i have to say but as ever the banter made up for that, and I managed probably the smallest bass for the species hunt

but its promising for the rest of year(and we are into march now thank god)
home about 12/30 i think

off to work sun 7am again with car loaded (as too lazy to remove night before) again lyme looked lovely, spoke to the ever lovely mrs p from work, told her we had loads of bait overfrom night before, " so where you going tonight she asked" well i wasnt going to turn that offer down so game on,

I knew from night before that baggie would have bits removed if i asked him so it was just me and the errrr..... bait that i had left at home, so finished work at 6 home for 6.45 dinner and back out by 7.30 and went back to seatown in dorset to hunt ray(went via the cobb at lyme as fancied trying there for anything, but too windy so a swift pint in the cobb arms then on)

had major trouble with shelter as couldnty find extesion pole that holds porch up, so the top was flapping about in wind nicely all eve(found it of course when I took it down later to see was under the back edge)

The fishing was slow but that just enought to keep you interested with dogs and pout, 2 of the dogs unhooking themselves at the beach thank you
last one of eve thought at long last had got something better but it was a tail hooked doggie
fished up and over high 1.20am then losttrack of time till realised was 3 am and so called a halt to the fun and was home for 4 , then up for kids at 7

was a long tough weekend, but at least got some points
weather was no where near as bad as weather men predicted

think i may give tonight a miss( well it is darts as well)

think when eventually get phychologist for son i'll as for help myself

dave

Top marks for effort

Wonder whether this is why the levels are being mucked around with?

Essential maintenance on River Exe Basin flood defence scheme begins

January 26,2008 By Elton Murphy

Environment Agency News Release

The Environment Agency starts work next week on essential maintenance of the Exeter flood alleviation scheme which is expected to last at least two weeks.

The work will involve inspecting the steel pile walls, clearing some of the vegetation which has grown into the blockwork on the channel sides, and checking a number of underwater valves to make sure they are working correctly.

This will ensure that the current level of flood protection is maintained.

The Exeter flood defence scheme was constructed 30 years ago and has now been passed to the Environment Agency to manage.

During the work, the Environment Agency will be opening the bypass gate at Trews Weir and this will lower the water level upstream and through Exe Bridges. The actual water levels will vary with the natural river flow, which will continue unimpeded with minimal impact on the local ecology.

‘This might not seem the best time to be doing the work, but there are few times in the year which do not conflict with ecological, fishing, commercial and recreational constraints. To protect migrating fish, no work will be allowed after mid-February,’ said Julian Brooke Houghton for the Environment Agency.

Exeter City Council will also be taking advantage of the lower water level to remove sediment which has built up in Cricklepit Creek.

The operation of the Canal will be maintained by a temporary dam across the Kings Arms gate at the upstream end and by pumping from the Exe to the Canal once the river level drops, to substitute for the normal draw-off into the Canal Basin.
