Bournemouth (Southbourne) 27/1

Went down to S coast instead of B.Channel in search of a fish.
Took Kirikomi, address of a tackle shop and a nice weather forecast.
Found tackle shop 17:00 - just sold out of worm (must order, now I know where it is).
Took directions from the local constabulary, who were enjoying a cup of tea with the proprietor, to a pub for the evening meal (Pricey but an enormous pie).
Arrived in a car park by the beach at 18:00, free parking from 6pm to 8am!!! Whoopee.
Tackled up & lobbed out soon after, haven't caught a fish for so long was not surprised when rod tip started rattling, dammed breakers on the line, couldn't be a fish yet!!!
Was fishing 2 hook flappers with sandeel and baby squid.
Someone forgot the filleting knife & board, only remembered the mackerel fillets and scisors later.
Every time I brought them in squid was untouched & sandeel just had the head left.
Changed up to 2/0 hooks & threaded sandeel as far up as I could manage.
Still came back with just the head.
Out came the bait elastic and Kirikomi eventually managed to hook a tiny pout. I knew they were bites really.

Any tips on fishing with sandeel appreciated .

Missed a bite myself around 9 just when we were expecting the tide to change, strange though, it kept coming in for another couple of hours.
I will check the tide timetable myself next time.

Caught my first fish of the year a little later on the baby squid

Carried on fishing till 00:45 with the odd nibble but no profitable excitement.
Managed to miss the terminal tackle coming out of the water till it clanged into the top ring, that was terminal for that rod who is now in the doctors having his ring re-attached.

Car was still in one piece in the car park so we drove back carefully, aren't speed cameras a pain at 2 in the morning, must have spent nearly as long looking at the speedo as at the road

Hooked on fishing again though.

Re: Bournemouth (Southbourne) 27/1

Next time you head down Bournemouth/Poole way give me a shout, I know of about 5 tackle/bait shops round there, and Southbourne is not the best spot, you should have headed a bit toward Boscombe peir, that is better fishing, or if you can handle a bit of a walk, get round to Hengistbury head.

I am half thinking about a trip to Studland to fish by the ferry, it is very tide dependant at the harbour mouth, but on the right day I have been told it can be an excellent spot.

Re: Bournemouth (Southbourne) 27/1

Southbourne, Ah! Happy memories! Some of my very few saltwater escapades have been down there (I was born and bred down there and most of my family still live there).

Mike is right, I believe it's better towards "the piers" or the other way towards Hengistbury Head but a bit more exposed down there.

The local tackle shops are usually very friendly, here's a link via the Christchurch AC website:

hi m8,

bait laccy is the way to go when casting any distance as when still frozen the hooks pull through them, the same applies when thawed and soft, often just leaveing the head on the hook .

i fish mainly at night so...............
i tend to fish them on a pennel rig , 1 hook through the tail end and one in the flank, sometimes binding 2 eels together and removeing the head and tail to release scent.
for smaller baits/hooks i cut em in 1/2 , thread the hook right through the section bind with laccy then sometimes tip with squid/worm.

Re: Bournemouth (Southbourne) 27/1

One of the ways I use sandeel, is to cut the heads and tails off. Lie then head to tail either side of a 4/0 and whip on with bait elastic. Great bait for Rays and Bass. I also use them float fished for Bass from the shore and Live on the boat.

Re: Bournemouth (Southbourne) 27/1

i was there on saturday night and only managed one whiting.

Had some nice ray last spring summer from there, may mate even had a baby undulate from there!
