Hythe Reclaimed Land 25/1/8

Fished a small team selection match yesterday 0900 - 1400 HW1311
Very calm day & calm water Sun shining ....

I drew peg 2 towards the barges - seal city

Tried every trick in the book but for the first time this year - blanked First blank of our little league as well - thank goodness you can have one throwaway result.

5 fish caught by pegs 8 9 & 10 towards the pier - all flounders - no-one else caught a thing ...... depressing .....

Lost a rig obviously got snagged but interestingly, manged to hook onto it with a subsequent cast, dragging in the line - snagged again so pulled for a break which gave. Got the line in - second set of gear all in okay and a load of line from the first chuck but no rig/weight etc surmised that the second snag was on the first lot of gear and the break was in the old mainline (used the second rod to cast) .....

.... still with me ? the moral of the story is this :

The first reel was loaded with 15lb Ultima line, the second line was Daiwa Sensor 15lb - the Daiwa line was the stronger of the two ....

Roll on fishing in Gods country again .....

Unlucky mate. How does the "Throw away" result work?

Have a league of 6 matches with 5 to count - worse result is the 'throw away - works well unless you miss one when that becomes the 'throwaway so all scores would count including the cr*p ones like this !

If you blank you get an extra 5 points added (lowest points for the league wins) and if you miss a match you get a further 5 points added to that (total of 10 points) to the lowest score on the day.

To try to explain that :

1st place with fish caught = 1 league point
2nd place fish caught = 2 points
3rd place fish caught = 3 points
4th place with NO fish caught = 8 points (lowest place 3 plus 5 for blank)
Non attendee - 8 points above plus 5 points = 13 points

Lowest points tally at the end of the league wins !

What this does do though is encourage people to fish in all the matches and allows for one to be missed if on holiday/work etc !

The Local Allans Marine Super League works in the same way and is a good way of running a league IMHO ....

Question Re: Hythe Reclaimed Land 25/1/8

How far down the list do the scores count?
If 50 fish and all catch does the 50th place get 50 points or is there a cut off point ie 5th?

All the way down - so 50th would get 50 points plus any blank points (the bigger the number of league members, it is better to increase the blanking points - dont know why - it just works !) Our team league 5 points for 15 anglers is okay, for the 'Super league its 10 points for 40 anglers.

Re: Hythe Reclaimed Land 25/1/8

I'm sure you did all you could to winkle out a fish; BUT why do organisers run a match, especially a team selection, when there are so few fish about.

Personally, it takes a freak occurrence to get me out at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb as it's usually sea scorpions, rockling and pin whiting IF YOU ARE LUCKY!

Much better to have a team selection where loadsa fish are being caught and where the best anglers show because of the efficiency of their techniques; rather than 'Old Joe' did well getting a flounder at Peg 6!

Just a personal viewpoint ...

Could not agree more ..... a lot of matches are 'lucky dips IMHO and does not always mean the best fisherman wins !

Sour grapes really
