needles 6/1/08

hit the needles yesterday on wight reble in my first effort of the year, we head the 3 mile rough ,
day started very slow with only a couple of dogs coming on the boat.
as the tide got away i changed down to see if the whiting were around and staight away i was pulling whiting up with the occasional pout, most whiting were around 2-3lb mark and were a nice change to see ,then some think better hit my skraggy bits of mackerel and after 10 min up came a conger of 25lb ish then it bit me off at the side of the boat.
once i and the rest of the boat had some whiting for dinner i chaged back to the big stuff for a fat lunker january cod,
but no such luck , i got another couple of conger to 40lb ish(all t-ed off at the side) and dropped somthink strange mid water, not a fight iv had before but felt like a big doggie with a wieght problem????? huss maybe, iv heard of a few coming in of late.

we also had a few small strap conger on the boat and few more pout and doggies
as the afternoon went on the weather was getting naughty and soon we upped anchor and head home slowly in a force 7.
it was a tough day far as cod go but was great to get out and give it ago, and for my 3rd trip in a row i manged to prize the money out of erics wallet to take the pools money with my biggest conger
on the way back in we passed the queen victoria, its huge

as far as the spieces hunt gos i took one piccy of the whiting

but t-bared off the conger at the side and was not have the piss ripped out of me by all onboard for photoghaphing a pout......lol, so il add them later on my next trip

cheers john

Well done.

Worth the investment.

Don't you eat conger?

I wonder where all the cod have gone?

hi terry

no m8 , i cant stand eating conger , but 1 of my m8s loves them and takes the deep hooked ones so thay dont go to waste, hense il get a piccy later.

the cod are still there just getting harder to catch due to the massive abundance of sprats at the moment, so not as hungery but at this time of year the real huge lumps turn up . since new year i know of 1 @34lb and 1 @38lb, sadly not on my hook , but il keep trying and praying

Re: needles 6/1/08

MN,

Do you know whether I am wasting my time fishing the deep water between Cowes and the Brambles. I suppose this is the egde of the deepwater channel.

I've had a few small thornbacks (2 - 3lb gone straight back), bass doggies and whiting but I wonder if it is worth going seriously for cod and conger or whether this is just a nursery ground.

I often end up here when test driving an engine tune up (I've been bu44ering about with the engine for ages). I usualy sling a line over.

Terry

Re: needles 6/1/08

hi terry
the inner solent its going to get tougher till the start of april when the first bass, plaice, smuts and rays come back in. till then it will mainly be dogs ,whiting and pout.
your not wasting your time at the brambles, but you will have to night fish to get the best chance of a cod. the does tend to be more codling around the inner solent but the is always the odd bigger ones around. i normaly fish smaller baits in the solent, like single squid or lug /squid cocktails on strong 4/0 hooks. if you getting the rays you cant be far away from the right mark.
if you use mackerel you will have swarms of doggies around you at this time of year, so steer clear of it till you desperate for a fish.
good luck m8
