Angry worst start to year ever , BL**DY GILL NETS

well as i posted in the shout box i decided to try rodney bay tonight, despite the gale force easterly, but there was a good surf and i had £3 worm

well it was really blowing bad rods went over twice before set up but i had to wet a line before running to pub
got there 1/2 hour over low tide but well pushing in due to wind
well i lost both sets of gear and 1 was on the clean both snagging in surf so i went to investigate

There lying in the surf was a long blue rope, on further investigation realised was the top of a gill net
I pulled on it but it was well set so followed it left over the rocks to find this tangled in it

a bass about 2lb
then a bit further on some dogs and mullet
then the biggest surprise and worst of all

a 9 1/2 lb cock salmon

now i know you are allowed to legally gill net, (dont know if this was or wasnt) but couldnt find any bouys just an old washing liquid carton as float, and it was only 20 yrds out for gods sake!!!

that was it i was mad i removed the fish (now figure i am just as guilty)

but felt so and didnt want the bugger that put this out to have the spoils, plus will be out there over another tide run as well

saw two others from club fishing just arround corner and they realised was wasted effort and packed up

I'M OF FOR A PINT NOW NEVER BEEN SO MAD
Thats my fave local beach ruined for a week now

and if your a netter and net there for reading our reports for gods sake give us a chance with the rod and line

sorry to be so mad,
lets hope rest of 2008 improves

dave

Re: worst start to year ever , BL**DY GILL NETS

What did you do with the net ? They would stick a net in your bucket if they knew there was a fish in it !

Some bloke left a layline on our local beach (not illegal again), 50 big hooks with squid on, he hardly ever checked them (about once every 3 days) , he left them on a very popular beach which has loadsa dogs, foxes, seagulls , people etc ..... its disappeared now tho (wonder who got rid of it ?) .... .... if it had been left any longer it was only a matter of time before a dog ate the baited hook .... have seen a fox during the night snagged on one of these types of fishing methods before

Re: worst start to year ever , BL**DY GILL NETS

I don't give a toss whether destroying nets is illegal or not mate, i'd do it without a shadow of guilt, those vermin are destroying sea angling and if i can do anything to damage their income, i will, nets are indiscriminate, i've seen sea birds drowned in the bloody things, and heard of dogs caught in them as well, as far as i'm concerned, the more damage done to netters the better. Of course, i've never actually wilfully destroyed a gill net, honest(!)

Hi Dave.

Did you think of contacting the EA to give them the position of it. You never know they might have come out and removed it if it was an illegal.
