| 15 Dec Abbotsbury Me and a mate fished Abbotsbury last night, had a quick chat in Weymouth Angling and decided that we would fish towards the west on the bank, so picked Abbotsbury and we went. Baits used were lug fresh blacks and commons, rag, squid and mackerel. High tide was about 10.00 and we started fishing low in the tide at 4.00 pm. I fished with two pulley rigs all night size 4/0's and 6/0's and my mate started off with a similar setup. Setup the first rod and decided to chuck it out before setting up the second rod, this resulted in the second rod not getting out for about an hour and half due to the whiting, they were going mental as soon as the bait was in the water they were onto it, after about 1.5 hours me and ronnie both had caught about 10 each and to top it all most were keepers! About time! We caught them to start with in ones . . . ![]() then in twos . . . ![]() then in threes . . . on two hooks?!?.. ![]() Which means fish cakes all round next week . . . all week! ![]() The whiting were going all night, attacking anything and everything we threw out there. Mixed in were the occasional doggie or pouting, but pretty much it was a 1 - 1.5lb whiting every chuck. With about an hour to go Ronnie decided to fish both his rods close in with large mackerel or squid baits, We'd both had one rod in close each night, but these were getting hammered by the whiting so i have to say i was ready to bet my house on more whiting, then he called me over cos he was into what felt like a better fish, which resulted in this bonus . . . ![]() Ronnie's first codling just shy of 3lb. Both packed up at about midnight in time to see the weigh in of a match that was being fished by - i think a group from Yeovil - to see all of them weighing catches of about 20 -30lb a piece! Haven't had such a busy night in ages, hardly noticed how cold it was! am never gonna moan about Chesil again, honest. __________________ It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses has it coming. ~John Steinbeck |
