Ben...............You need to use a very thin oil like the one called Rocket. This should be available from a good local tackle store. Clean all old oil/grease off first, then a thin coating of the rocket oil. Only use something like WD 40 to clean but dont lubricate with it because it dries off too quick, leaving the bearings etc to bind.
When you fish as often as you do, it would be as well to do this every third trip.

As a rule I tend to always give my reels a good run under the cold water tap when I get home, even if thats the only thing I do after a trip. Just pop them in the airing cupboard to dry off.

As for brands of reels.............ABU ABU ABU. I would never be without my 6500's.
Prices have never been so good for them eaither. You can now buy an abu today for the same price as I was buying them in the 80's. Indeed one that I use is from back then, and still runs as good as the day I got it!!

look out for 2nd hand ones

when they get sold here 2nd hand they are almost always in realy good condition and cheap

also try a bloke on ebay silverquatro i think he sels abu reels and he is very reliable

just had alook at the c3 and its a nice looking reel, looks alot like the 1 i have at the mo but nicer and not shakespear

Start saving the pennies mate and you won't be disapointed. Nice braking system on them that works. So the better you get at casting the more you can adjust those brakes. All done by the turn of the dial.
