DRSportfishing is on a distinguished road
Costa Rica Fishing Report March 1

What a wild past week we had here at DRSportfishing, as all of our groups of clients had some amazing fishing. Here are the highlights:

Kelly and husband Wes had a day to remember this past week. After day number one was filled with grouper, snapper, and roosterfish, day number two was a quest for marlin. That quest was complete a little more than an hour after stepping onto the boat on day two. Wes hooked up on his first ever marlin on the fly, and what a marlin it was. This fish, over 600 pounds, gave Wes the fight of a lifetime. After a long battle in the intense sun, the fish got the best of all of us, and we released it after 5:00 PM! A fight that lasted over 8 hours, in which we got the fish within IGFA releasing regulations half a dozen times.

Our California crew of Paul and Fred got to experience great fishing on both coasts. Their first trip had them traveling through the beautiful banana plantations up to Tortuguero, where they stayed at an incredible lodge and fished with Captain Eddie Brown and his brother. They had some amazing days of tarpon fishing, landing between 3-9 fish each of the three days they fished. Two days later, they were down in Los Suenos sail fishing, where they went 4 for 5.

Out next crew of Ross, Mike, and Matt came here from Houston, Texas in search of some sails and marlin, and boy did they find them. On one day, they got 19 to the boat, and our two other groups of clients got 15 and 11 on their own boats that same day. The Smith father and son team was happy after they got their 15, as were Sean and Shawn from Houston, who went on the boat that landed 11. The Texas crew made up of Ross and friends got a shot at a marlin on their third day of fishing, and Ross brought a 300+ pound blue marlin to the boat. What a trip they had!

Our new friend Chris out of Chicago also had some luck. He went out 3 days with Captain Henry and his mate Rafael, and had a blast catching more than a dozen sails and some roostefish that he wanted so badly. Another crew of Derek and some buddies from Russia had some great days, releasing 11 sails in one day.

Last but not least was the Sorenson family, who have been dear friends of mine for who knows how long. I took them down to Golfito to fish with Bobby McGuinness, and we had one hell of a trip. One of those days we landed 15 sails and one marlin. They then came up to Jaco, where they enjoyed more great fishing, zip lining, and horseback riding. What a week we have had, now time to take a few days to catch up on the business end of things. Bottom line, fishing has been incredible, as the sailfish bite has been incredibly consistent the past 10 days, 40 miles offshore, 20 miles offshore, east, west, you name it. Marlin are slowly but surely moving in, and rooster fishing has stayed strong. The Caribbean side is strong, as the tarpon have been hitting consistently.
