Re: thornback ray

Getting back to the start of this thread. As I've been told Challaborough is good for ray (anyone know what species) and I'm hoping to get down there this weekend I thought I'd give them a go. So, is the advice a pulley rig with 3/0 size hook and some sort of fish strips? Do you need some kind of strong trace for ray?

Re: thornback ray

yep it is good for small eyes

need 80lb main line on traces and around 30lb hooklength on pulley

also its sand eel you use for bait

and expect some doggies!

Re: thornback ray

is it a pennel pully rig you wanna use??, and also why do you need such a strong trace/hooklength??
would you recomend stronger main line as well??

Re: thornback ray

yep thats the rig and you need the strong hooklength coz they can bite through it and also theres quite a few doggies around so they can fray it easily

i use 20lb main line coz they cant fray that and theres no need to go heavier than that really i dont think

Re: thornback ray fishing for

Thanks Steve & Dave

Is there anywhere around that part of the world I can pick up live prawns? I'm far too lazy to try to catch any! How do you hook live prawns anyway?

Re: thornback ray fishing for

yea like steve i am not sure where to get them down there.
but i would guess a small net and some scouting around the rocks of the island you will find them and dont be lazy pross prawning can be great fun!
plus i dont know anywhere up here that sells them alive.

then if you do get them just hook them in the 2nd or 3rd segment up from the tail hook them any further up and u will notice when the flip you cant hear them clicking and (me personally i think that the click helps attract the fish)
