Skate/Ray fishing On the Isle of Sheppy

Hi all can anyone give me some basic info on catching skate and ray off the shore please. There has been loads of em coming up at eastchurch so the local tacle shop has been telling me. I am told the bait they are taking at the mo is ragworm and sandeel. What sort of traces should I use for em? Pennel rig? Also what pound line should I have on my reel and make trace with? also told they are right buggers to get off the bottom so do i lift my rod in the air and keep pulling or is there a better method?
