Spooling up new line

Having had a couple of line losses lately, I've decided it's about time that I change the line on my reel. I've only done this a couple of times before and so looked through the forum for instructions on how to do this propperly.

I've seen several warnings about line twist being a problem, but I still haven't got a clear picture in my head of how to perform the task in the correct way.

The common theme in my searches was that I had to lay the line on the reel spool in the same direction as it comes off the storage spool. Also, it helps if I soak the storage spool in tepid water before putting it on to the reel (But I don't know how long for!) and that I should load the line when it's under slight tension, I.E. Get someone to hold the storage spool on at pencil or something whilst I wind the reel.

I've draw up a quick diagram of how I imagine the process to work (Please excuse my poor artwork!). Could someone tell me if I'm on the correct track here.

I should add that I'm talking about fixed spool reels only here.

Cheers,

Rich.

Re: Spooling up new line

Spot on.
The line should come off the spool and onto the reel w/the same coil/curve. For a level wind, hold the spool horizontaly. For a spinning reel, put the spool on the floor and point the rod/reel at it.
Tight lines

Re: Spooling up new line

yup all good! but get your self a bucket of warm water and put the spool in that!
1, it stops the spool bouncing all over the room and tangling round stuff!
also this is no good as it a recipe for line twist as you will be taking line from bothsides of the line spool every so often
2, the warm water softens the line and makes a good clean line lay on the spool!
learnt this from my carping days and havnt looked back!

good diagrams by the way! nothing wrong with your drawing skills mate!
quickest easiest way to explane it could be!!!!

when filling the reel, if the line is looped between the first eye and reel!
flip over the line spool and try that! play around till you get nice flatish line between the eye and reel! this will show you the way the line originaly went on the spool at the factory!
amazes me why line companys havnt botherd to put a sticker on the side to tell you which way? save alot of hassle! but spose they dont care! when you fill a reel with twisted line you just have to go get a new 500yrds!

Re: Spooling up new line

i personally don't bother with the water stuff. i get my missus to hold the spool on a wooden spoon. then attach the reel to a rod butt and reel as if you were retrieving (but a bit slower) putting a little tension with your thumb and finger. i put a little too much line on, then do a couple of careful casts and it's all bedded in nicely.

i change my line after every sesh so the quickest and simplest way is good for me.

Re: Spooling up new line

Cheers guys, I put some 12lb mono on a spool of my new spinning rod on Friday night, and got my mate to just hold the spool on a pencil. Seemed to be okay, but I did have a slight problem on the first 10-15 casts. It soonn settled down, and I've got to say it's a great way to fish. Full report elsewhere.

i buy cheap mono in kilo spools (i think i worked it out at about 20 pence per reel when i brought 2 spools years ago). as it's cheap it's not very long lasting, so it gets changed every sesh. this way if the line gets damaged/ nicked on stones, piers, rocks, groynes, etc, it will last the sesh but not much longer. so you don't throw £5 down the drain if it does get damaged or you pull for a break.

it only takes a couple of casts to bed most of the line down. imo.
