Crab preparation and hooking peeler crab

Hardbacks work well in the solent when the smuts are running but i think its the scent and juices that makes peeler such a good bait.

What would happen if you put a cage on the beach/in the water and put the crabs in there till they molted?
A cage strong enough to keep then IN and predators Out. In a secluded enough place, so no one would bother it either?
(remember:this[dumb]question is from the middle of the continental US)
