If you tank crabs up and control the water temp you can bring them onto peel but its a lot of bother.
Hardbacks work well in the solent when the smuts are running but i think its the scent and juices that makes peeler such a good bait.
Yeah thanks for that. It does sound like a lot of bother. I`ll just have to look a bit deeper into the rocks

Re: Crab preparation and hooking peeler crab

What would happen if you put a cage on the beach/in the water and put the crabs in there till they molted?
A cage strong enough to keep then IN and predators Out. In a secluded enough place, so no one would bother it either?
(remember:this[dumb]question is from the middle of the continental US)

you will come across crabs under rocks that are belly to belly having abit of hmm how shall i put this for our younger readers never mind the one underside is a soft crab very good bait ready for the hook full of the nessasary juises the fish like to be used straight away as they dont keep for long but be carefull the crab on top can be very agresive due to the fact that hes being deprived of his hmm how can i put this

Sorry dont mean to be Thick but what rig is being talked about in the peeler preparation demo as it mentions 2 hooks?
Is it a Pennel Rig?

yeah should imagine so.

Crab is a bait i use predominately in the summer.

you do get used to what they look like and how they move after a bit of practice, unfortunately its just a bit of hard work required to find an area that produces for you, and when you find one don't tell anyone!!!!

then you can whack a hook through em and drop them in a gully...don't worry about using a big bait either crab will promp virtually anything to have a go...the picture below is 2 crab on a size 4/0 and i've picked up small silver eels on this size bait who've jumped in and robbed it before a bass.
