| Re: tripod Hi whorlicks, Welcome to the forum. You could use a couple of garden canes bound together to make a tripod! When I was a kid we used to use an iron spike used on roadworks to fence areas off as a sand spike, they are just a straight pole with a hook shape on the end. weighed a ton but did the trick. If its a sandy beach a sand spkie will suffice and can be made easily enough. All the best. | Re: tripod Frozen lug can work well for flat fish. Fresh is best but frozen is better than nothing! J __________________ ><((((º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><((((º>¸. ·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·.. ><((((º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><((((º> |

Re: tripod When i go fishing from beach on hol's, i take a length of 2 inch plastic drain pipe. (because it's light & fits in suitcase) Saw off one end so it's sharp to bury deep in the sand. Worked well for me. __________________ Fishing - the best fun you can have with your clothes on.

Re: tripod hi, welcome to the forum, where good idea's and tips are abundant, cheapest i've found was as jason suggests, 3 bamboo canes, should you have a carpet shop handy, the canes they use are up to 13' long and very robust, they are usually disposed off, you can then cut to then the lengths required and use a bungee cord around the top, only disadvantage is they are a bit cumbersome, but work great. one very thick one could be made to resemble a sand spike with a side section cut away down one side, bury the spike in the ground, and sit rod butt in the cutaway. __________________ good luck and tight lines chris lifes to short for animosity.

Re: tripod You cvan make a tripod easily and cheaply with a few bits from B&Q: 3 bits 3x1 approx 6 foot long, A bolt and wingnut, a bit of old rope and a flapback hinge. The pics are I hope self expanatory, The rope is just to stop the legs speading, drill the back two legs and thread one end of the rope and tie a knot. It'll not be the lightest or the coolest on the beach but it'll work and keep you going until you can buy a decent one. Hope that helps!

Re: tripod When you've got a little extra cash and are buying bait anyway get an extra wrap of 10 worms and freeze them yourself. Keep doing this and before you know it you'll have a good 40/50 worms in stand-by for when you can't afford worms or the shop hasn't got any. Bad weather or very cold temps will often be dry times for the bait shop as the worm digger simply can't get out to dig. Also buy a kilo box of squid and after spitting into smaller packages, keep that in your bait freezer too. I have a few trays of frozen mussels from ASDA in the freezer too. Frozen baits are not the best but you can get the best out of them. The tissue within the to worm breaks down when frozen so the insides are a gooy liquid and then they get washed out by the tide very quickly when you are fishing with them. Don't bother to thread them on the hook, lash them with bait cotton. A worm folded in half and lashed to the shank of a size 2 or 1 aberdeen is a great bait for dabs around here. The lashing of the worm makes lots of pockets in the worm that contain the gooy liquid and they won't wash out as quickly. Bait cotton is self gripping so you don't need to tie knots or anything, just go round and round and snap it off when you've secured it to the hook. Make sure you get a bit of lashing above the eye of the hook - this will stop the worm sliding down and masking the hook point. 2 frozen worms and a long slice of squid lashed into a sausage shape is a good bait for bigger stuff, codling/dogs/whiting etc. A worm bulked out with frozen mussels works for whiting well too. Take a look at the breakaway bait loader, it'll make baiting up a lot easier. One more thing, have a spare rig and lead clipped to your tipod so it hangs down and doesn't tangle. You can spend a few minutes baiting the hooks on this spare rig while waiting for a bite on the rig thats actually out in the sea. When you reel in, unclip the old rig and clip on the new, ready baited rig and cast straight out. Its saves time, you'll have baits in the water for as long as possible increasing your chances of a catch and you'll be about to sort out and bait your rigs without having to hurry. If you are not sure about baiting cotton, search youtube for instructions videos, lots of helpful stuff there. Hope this helps
