multiplier reel

hi people i have just bought a very cheap multiplier reel for £16 brand new. I always use fixed spools but always wanted to use a multiplier, but what has put me off is my mate who spends most of his time whilst im fishing is sorting out the birds nests lol. so i thought i would get a cheap one to try as i dont want to spend loads on something im not going to like. Its a chieftain multiplier (45) blister pack. as i bought this online i couldnt get to ask any questions about it first. so any info about seting it up and how long it will last for would be very helpful. another thing is too it showed on the net that it was all metal but its plastic the one i received which im not too bothered as it was only cheap.

cheap multipliers are a false economy mate - without decent gearing, bearings and brakes you wont get the benefits and will probably be put off for life

If anything is likely to give in on it its the gears i would suspect ...
A second hand Daiwa 7ht will cost you 50 squid and last you atleast 10 years , they cast like a dream and are probably the most user freindly multipliers ever invented

Have a bash with it and let us know how you get on - who knows you might find it to be great !

Re: multiplier reel

As steve says ,cheapie multipliers do only one thing , put you off using them for life , can you get your money back ????

Get yourself a decent used one ,it will save you a whole load of stress...

Re: multiplier reel

agreed with steve and mick tho i prefere the daiwa slosh oor penn 525 if i could afford one ,,you need to tune a multiplier 9 out of ten its running to fast for ya if its tangling lol,i dont know if this is how the propper lads like mick and scots do it but when i get a new reel i set it on rod and fix 5oz lead i hold rod wind lead up to tip adjust the nut in center of side plate opposit handle till lead runs to floor freely (in free spool) with a little resistance by tightening or loosing it ,,try a few casts as you get used to it back it off a bit more rem to feather the line hard at night but you get the hang comes with practice and by listening to the reel ,,,,if you tangle its usualy a locked loop get your mate to walk away with line in his hand as you untangle it,,if you want a good quality cheap multy try the okuma nitrix i have 3 and they cast realy well have good clutch ect,,,

Scottish and Mental, can you tell me a bit more about the Daiwa 7ht please. I'm the same as Billy, I've always used fixed spools and never tried multipliers, probably because I still have memories of terrible birds nests my old dad used to get using the old fashioned Penn mults with bakelite bodies. Which Daiwa model would suit someone learning to use a mult? The Millionaire? The Mag?
Would you recommend starting with a model that has a line lay facility? Kind regards. John R.

Re: multiplier reel

Hi Dadwood and Billy , i wouldn`t buy a Millionaire myself because there is a bar running accross the top of them which makes getting your thumb around the top of the spool a major pain in the a**e (unless you mean the newer ones) , I learnt to use a mulit with a abu7000ctc3 sports rocket, this was a lovely little reel and you can pick one of these up for £30-50 quid these days, plus they have a nice open spool allowing you to get your thumb over it and making your casts feel more secure (and confidence makes casting more natural and relaxed). You can also look at abu 7000ct mag elites, these may be a tad more expensive (£50-80) but they are quality and will run nice and smooth. I personnaly wouldn`t touch a level wind as they get in the way of your thumb when casting and if you do end up getting a birds nest (which if your learning you will) then they really get in the way and make it almost impossible to untanggle your line. I think of it as a bit like driving a car, learn manual and you can drive both, same with the level wind, learn without and you can use both.

The thing most people dont realise (in my opinion) is that birdsnests are caused by poor casting style and lacks of concentration on line lay. If you want to start using a mulit then first you nedd to be able to cast gently and smoothley thus allowing the reel to spool off at an even rate, A jerky cast will result in the reel throwing out loops of line midcast due and thus a birdsnest is inevitable. When you start of look into doing gentle off the ground casts (can be looked up online and tutorials on you tube), also set the breakes high on the reel and this will lessen the chances off an overrun. Then when you retrieve just keep an eye on the spool and try to lay the line evenly across the face of the spool so that once reeled in it is not all bunched up at one side of the spool (sounds difficult but honestly can be done really easily and in no time at all you can do it without looking at the reel). Oh and MOST IMPORTANT is that you MUST remember to put your finger on the spool when the lead hits the water, otherwise the lead will be going slow as it sinks but your reel will still be running fast and spooling line all over the place, causing said birdsnests. Once you have been using a multi for a while you can hear the changes of speed in the reel and you just "know" when to stop the spool, allowing you to fish at night but as a beginner i wouldn`t suggest it untill you feel confident using it.

As with anything practice makes perfect and once you got the hang of it you can then start lessening off the breakes gradually and start casting further and further untill it becomes second nature to you. Then you can practically turn the breakes off. I would highly reccomend going down the beach and just practice with a lead, you wont get so wound up if you dont think it is interfering with your fishing and you will be able to soely concentrate on the cast.

Hope this helps

Tight lines

Joe
