Re: Multiliers and Fixed Spool Reels Best keep heavy work to multi's - F/S perform in the same bracket as the mag elite group of multi's. i.e. light to medium heavy work The point I was making was that over many years the F/S was seen as the reel of kids and novice surfcasters who matured into multi's because thats the reel design for the experienced fishermen. Over the decades F/S design has evolved greatly - much the same as multi's. The F/S set up with low dia braid fitted onto long rods is taking surf fishing into new areas. Its time to shed the old wimp reel image and recognise the F/S as a quality tool for the surf fisherman. Respect

Re: Multiliers and Fixed Spool Reels I think that one of the major advantages of Multiplier reels has not been stated. That is the ability to hold a much greater length of line in a reasonably compact shape. I own a superb F/S that can be used for Big Game fish,a Diawa Saltiga Expedition 6500,this reel along with the Shimano Stella 20,000 is arguably one of the best (and most expensive)F S ever made. However in line capacity it fall way short of a good multi, it only holds 400m of 37Kg Braid, and if using mono of 50lb even less than that ! I have landed Yellowfin Tuna to 70lbs on 50lb braid using the Diawa, but if I had been lucky enough to connect with some 100-120lb 'Kegs' of Tuna I would not have been able to cope with the screaming runs of 500/700/1000m that these fish are famous for ! ![]() __________________ Chris

Re: Multiliers and Fixed Spool Reels Well done, i think it was very well said, however, i think i remember reading, multipliers don't cant well with light line, but i have allways found the lighter the line, the better the cast, however, all have different expierences :) All in all i think it would be great help to any begginer

Re: Multiliers and Fixed Spool Reels Great read, may i add only my 1% as the rest is fairly spot on and time spent writting it fair play. Multiplier or and fixspool My 1% in disadvantages you say shorter distances with lighter line. Not true, 0.35mm line for general shore fishing or casting and i get 176yrds with 2 hook clipped down rig with bait, on clean ground 0.31 line with same set up i get 204yrds both measured thats fishing set up for me, on the field casting ive seen lighter lines go much further than heavier lines right down to 0.25. I wouldnt go any lighter snap offs etc on the shore, but lighter lines also means lighter leads. Now thats only my opinion guys, Superb reading mate, i mean that. Cheers. Stud. Ps it also depends who is casting. Last edited by paul p; 11-12-2009 at 03:13 PM. Reason: error
