Re: Multiliers and Fixed Spool Reels

Cracking article Mr smoothy.
I fished fixed spool reels for about 20 odd years achieving over 200yrd casts them about 5 years ago i was left some money and changed my rods and reels to multipliers.
At first i thought what have i done but now i would never go back, its hard to explain but the smoothness in cast and the contact you feel with your end gear is great.
So for me its multipliers all the way now apert when spinning or plugging.

Re: Multiliers and Fixed Spool Reels

good write up mate.

i think for rough ground it depends on the reel make e.g- sloshes go at 6.1- 1, which is quicker than most fixed spools.

i'm a multi man, but don't know why. when i was a junior it was a 'cool' thing to use a multiplier. but don't think there's a great difference. multi's are better for controlled dropping e.g- under piers/ boats. fixed spools are better for casting heavier weights, especially back casting.

Re: Multiliers and Fixed Spool Reels

Nice reading,

The real you enjoy is the one you should use, different situations require different types, for deep sea if you are after really big ones (+500lbs) forget the fixed spool, how ever, for most other conditions, especially when the rod
is in your hands, the natural positionning of the fixed spool real under the rod
is an advantage, you dont have to keep it balanced on top.The use of braided
lines today allows smaller diameters with great strength, this enables to have enough spare line in case of an endless rush inspite of using a FS.The speed of retreive offered today by top manufacturers (up to 1.35m per turn),can make the difference wheather for the action of the lure (very quick for Barracuda and Jacks/wahoos), or for pumping out a big one before hitting the corals and breaking the line.
Regarding light/ultralight casting, especially in small rivers with trees around,
you can cast with a fixed spool by using the "nerve of the rod" and keeping it infront of you, this is harder to do with a multiplicator.
The big advantage of the multiplicator is the non warping of the line no matter how many times it was dragged out.

Enjoy Fishing!!

Re: Multiliers and Fixed Spool Reels

im a multi man as you say smoothhound! but just for close range shore,
spinning ,plugging, wobbling,
when it comes to youser friendly course, carping, sea float and big distance
i go for a fixedspool! just horses for courses i think!
wish it was practical to do all with a multi, as the balance in ya hand is way better! be that just holding it, or reeling in a heavy weight! cranking in a lump of weed on a fixed spool just feels realy ungainly! its all over the place.
perhaps this is becouse i am holding the tip high when reeling in at sea and low to the ground when on the lake?

Re: Multiliers and Fixed Spool Reels

Hi Guys - Great article and an interesting debate!

I suspect that the traditional image of the novices favourite eggbeater is on the wane with the exciting developments such as low diameter braid, F/S design advances and european long rod fishing influences. Lets not forget increasing trends towards summer fishing focus. The eggbeater has been laid to rest RIP! Hail the Fixed Spool!

Happy casting
