Multiplier reel help needed!

I am looking into buying a multiplier reel and as a lot of this stuff is still new to me, was wondering what's the best type of line to be using for shore/beach fishing on a multiplier reel and do I still need to use shock leader if using 40lb+ mono line ?
Any help would be great Many thanks!

Re: Multiplier reel help needed!

Id say 40 lb is too much for beach fishing , maybe off the rocks at portland etc , you just wont get the distance you want , for all my fishing i use 16 lb sakuma night crystal , same diameter as say 15 lb daiwa tournament and i also use tapered shockleader 15 - 60 lbs but i do cut a metre off , works well for all the venues i fish but that said i very rarely fish over rough ground

Re: Multiplier reel help needed!

I'm with cuckoo on the strength.
I would initially go for a cheap line, keeping as small a diameter as possible untill I had got used to casting with a multiplier. If you blow up a few spools of high quality expensive line & have to take the scissors to it your pocket will feel the pinch.

Re: Multiplier reel help needed!

So just use about a 16lb main line and only a meter of the tapered shock leader is that what your saying cuckoo?
And is it a lot more difficult to cast with a multiplier reel ?
And the other day fished for bass off Weymouth beach, my mate took 4 bass with his clear 22lb line and no shock leader, I had 50lb shock leader that was bright orange and not one bite, so decided to cut off my shock leader and then caught 2 Bass within 20mins dose colour of line make a huge difference then?

Re: Multiplier reel help needed!

if you plan to fish at close range around portland and in the harbours then no shock leader is required mate.
Generally there is no point using a mainline above 20lb and would disagree slightly with Spahill - in that cheap mono can bring more problems than its actually worth - especially if it doesnt bed in on the reel properly .
I also wouldnt bother with a tapered leader as they will add 20 odd yards to a 150 yard cast , and add nothing to a 50 - 70 yard chuck..
With regards to colour its all about confidence in what you are using - my mainline is 15lb titanium F1 and 18lb black F1 on the slosh's - all with bright yellow greased weasel..
If you plan to fish chesil for the mackerel and dont use a shockleader - phone me first so i can make sure im up the other end of the beach !
Bass fishing is best kept simple so usea portland rig or plug and yes, i would go for a mainline of about 18-20lb straight through in clear .
On the multiplier front - why do you want to change from fixed spool ?- distances wont change untill you get into the top end of casting fella

If you wanna try a cast i will be at bexington on Tuesday

no m8, only 1m of shock leader is not what he means what he said was he buys tapered leaders at a standard length and cuts about a meter off.

i'd guess this is off the thin end as some taper down to about 10b/s which defeats the object,

Re: Multiplier reel help needed!

Thanks for all your help. HaHa about the feathers, I always use shock leader for feathering so no crash helmets needed. LOL.
Bright yellow greased weasel is what I have been using for shock leader, but will defo cut it off from now on and just use an 18-20lb clear main line when fishing close range in shore for Bass as I think they can see bright shock leader and avoid it.
And reason for looking into multiplier reels is that I have just replaced my 11ft Fladen with a 13ft ABU STIGMA.
Stigma rod and it is ok for a fixed spool reel but is more rung for a multiplier reel and I would like to improve my casting distance and style and feel I need to upgrade reel to improve.

As you will have no doubt noticed the new rod will have smaller eyes and this causes problems with a fixed spool due to the line coming off the spool in big loops instead of straight with a multiplier ( i aplogise if im teaching you to suck eggs here mate but unsure how much help your after lol ) thus reducing the casting distance by a huge amount !

On another point you could actually use a clear mono shockleader if you wanted ..
If your gonna fish the bank with your new rod and multi if you get one i would use 15lb mainline and the same greased weasel ..

see if you can try a multiplier like the 7ht ( my personal choice of weapon ) on the grass and see how you get on - its not that hard if you
can cast competently already !
