Cast Nets

I'm thinking of buying a cast net for bait fishing.

Has anyone tried this?

On another forum someone said fishing with a net is illegal in the UK unless you are a licenced commercial fisherman?

Also, I've found only one retailer in the UK. Others have them on their websites but none in stock. Anyone know of 'real' angling shops that sell them?

Really looking foeward to Sunday. intending to go after some more of those lovely conger 20 miles or so off Start Point.

Re: Cast Nets

Didn't Hugh Fernley WhatsHisName use one for Mullet in Seaton harbour? Fairly tricky to use by the looks of things, but I guess they must be legal. Probably best check with the EA or DSFC.

Let us know how you get on with them Conger.

Re: Cast Nets

Just had a call from the skipper of the boat I was going out on. Due to the weather he's not going.

I've gone through all the lists I can find from Salcombe to Exmouth and everyone's either full or not going out. Ho-Hum

Re: Cast Nets

Anyone can use nets but people that dont like netting will give you misleading info about them to put you off.

Re: Cast Nets

Right, I've just bought one. Hopefully it will arrive in time for next weekend.

Might get the wife to video my practice efforts to give everyone a laugh!

Re: Cast Nets

I think you only need to get a licence for nets and traps if you are selling your catch. I'm looking into getting one suitable for catching live sandeel from a boat.

Re: Cast Nets

My new toy has arrived and is currently inverted in a bucket of water and fabric softner as per the instructions.

That gives me some time to practice in the field next to work tomorrow, then down to the harbour early on saturday before my boat trip. Who knows? the skipper might even let me have a go throwing it from the boat when we stop en-route to the conger marks

Can't Wait! ;0)
