Re: hook snoods

the best colour that a fish can see at depth is blue the worst is yellow and red so in deeper water you should use blue as an attractor not greens and yellows and red and silver is good too so painting your lead lifts and your leads blue=more fish

Re: hook snoods

if anyone is going wrecking soon try a red pirk with a red muppet and see how many you catch then try say a crome pirk and a blue muppet and see what you catch and compare results i will be trying it next year when i go wrecking but any feedback before then would be great

Re: hook snoods

Ill do a search on the net, there should be some sort of formula for optimum colours at certain depths of water, Its strange though like Ben said red is usually the sign of danger in the animal world yet it seems to be a popular colour for lures lines etc.

The other thing is that after 50 meters or so it doesn’t really matter what colour you use because even with specialized deep water fish with massive eyes that take in the smallest fraction of available light, the vast majority of fish can’t see diddly squat any way.

I would think as I said before vibrations, noise and especially smell would be the way to attract fish at these depths.

The thing is that water is a very bad place to be if vision is important, so all fish have evolved to have vision as a back up, sharks for example can be attracted by scent and vibrations in the water from miles away, yet their vision is extremely bad, Whales send out calls that travel half way around the world, and again they couldn’t see a barn door at 50 paces.

I believe that fish use scent, vibrations and noise to find mates and to find food way more than sight, and they only use an extremely limited vision when very close to an object and only then above depths of 30 meters.

Cheers Mark.

Re: hook snoods

going back to a slightly more serious note i have noticed if fishing on a pier or something for the whiting if not getting any bites just lift the lead on and off the bottom a couple times so you can feel the lead bounce on the sand and then watch the bites start coming they seem to home in on the vibration of the lead bouncing the bottom. im here scratching my head now trying to work out a way of making a vibrating lead weight!

Yes! I sometimes use a lighter lead in a strongish tide, using the theory that it will move, causing the vibrations needed to attract whiting. My mate raised an eyebrow when I told him, but I reckon it works
