im so bored so i thought to make a guide to pollock fishing from the shore and boat. identification and info on pollock 1st this is a pollock. ![]() pollock are a very hard fighting fish and is especiely fun spinning on light gear. pollock live mainly offshore on wrecks but some smaller and sometimes very big ones lure by piers and rocks and if your rally lucky, inshore wrecks. shore fishing for pollock shore pollock mainly lure by piers, rocky areas, inshore wrecks really most obstructions in the water they are there. the main ways of fishing for pollock off piers: spinning feathering live shrimp floatfishing a mackerel strip ragworm strips of squid by rocks and inshore wrecks: using large spinners, spinning sandeel ( dont ask but i saw it on discovery shed and it worked), using an artificial worm( my favorite personaly is the black and bubblegum pink firetail jellie worm) even bait but high risk of snag pier fishing methods to catch pollock first up to all you ficko's this is a pier ( obviosly south parade) ![]() spinning: toby lures and small dexter wedges are ideal to catch pollock. light gear is perfect to especielly on piers. mainly up to 3lb max feathering: just like you would for mackerel. sometimes baited feathers catch bigger ones. up to 3lb live shrimp: use on a free flowing trace or under a float. i have seen pollock up to 5-6 lb caugh on his method float fishing a mackerel or sandeel: i have caught my biggest float caught pollock using mackerel strip which wieghed in at 2 lb 10oz ragworm use on a running ledger rig. use a whole king rag rock and wrecking on shore: large toby lures and spinners 40-50g lures will catch killer pollock spinning sandeel hook once through the snout wih a 1/0 sakuma hook use on a running ledger rig with a 1oz wieght. retrieve slowish pase jelly worms: thread the worm round onto a 1/0 sakuma hook. use a running ledger rid with a long flowing trace. 1oz wieght is perfct. retrieve at a mediem pace. and this is rocky water, you can tell if its the same on he beach ![]() boat fishing for pollock. most boat fishing for pollock is done over wrecks. Unweighted “Shads” can be fished on a 6/0 hook and a longer trace. Martin Cosgrave, a top local bass angler, reckons he can successfully fish them through the wreck, closer to the structure. Always put a swivel in the middle of longer traces which may extend to 12 feet or more as this will minimise line twists. ![]() Lures such as Jelly worms can be fished on smaller hooks, though such hooks must still be strong and capable of withstanding the fierce head banging of an Pollack.![]() Jelly worms and various “Redgills” or “Eddystone Eels” all fish well, particularly on the smaller tides, when the extra wriggling movement they provide can tempt shy fish to feed. ![]() The newly introduced “Storm” artificial Sand Eels look particularly enticing. Whatever lure you choose, be prepared to experiment with size and colour until you find the one that the fish prefer at that time. Always look to see what the fish which are brought aboard are coughing up. Today the Pollack were regurgitating partly digested Anchovies and Smelt; small thin silver fish about 4 inches in length. A couple of trips ago, they were seen to have been feeding on “Sprats”, small Herring about 5 inches long. Another day it was Sandeels. hope this helps you may turn out like this ![]() regards ollie ![]() Last edited by pompy.bass.man; 07-26-2009 at 08:12 AM. Reason: adding more to the thread

Re: tips on pollock fishing- by pompy.bass.man Hi Pompey, Do you know who took the pictures of the two lads holding the Pollock? Did you ask permission if the picture could be used? Regards Drew __________________ All that Glitters is not Gold Secretary of The Blandford Sea Angling Club

Re: tips on pollock fishing- by pompy.bass.man Good bit of info there Pompey. Just one thing and I am sure its not your fault as the info seems to come from a credible source but I am 99% certain that the picture is not a Pollock bit a Coalfish. The laterel line is straight as a die and thats the number one identifier for a coalfish. Anyone like to agree or disagree? __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk

Re: tips on pollock fishing- by pompy.bass.man Hi all, I think they came from Dave Harrisons web site. I was on the boat the day the pictures were taken, 21st February 2009. The pictures are of TJ and Richard both members of this Forum. There is also a picture on myself directly above the one that appears on this thread, Andy G, and Imran (Mule). We were all out with the Blandford SAC. Regards Drew __________________ All that Glitters is not Gold Secretary of The Blandford Sea Angling Club
