Unhooking Fish

Hi sorry to make so many threads, but I have so many questions!

Me and my mate have been fishing for a little while now, but still havn't really got the hang of unhooking fish when the hook goes deep. It's horrible when the hook is so far down that you can't get it out and the fish dies before you can get it back in. Has anyone any advice on how unhook fish?

Thanks,

Saul

Re: Unhooking Fish

Saul,
Firstly, there is no need to say sorry, as we all had to learn, in my younger days there was no such thing as the PC, your are lucky, as you can learn from so many people from the PC.

Have you got a disgorging tool.
Also if you strike just that little bit quicker I:E if your float moves down just a little then strike, hopefully this will help you. And that you will get the confidence in time, also try and take someone with more experience with you.

Re: Unhooking Fish

Ye this forum is a god send!

And ye i have a normal and t-bar discourger, and i do try to strike asap, but still they always seem to swallow it, and when i put the discourger in it just pushes it down further, then bites again without letting me pull it out. when i've looked at the discourger the size hook we usually use seems to still petrude from it so the hook point is still able to hook into the fish, but i do have a pretty big discourger. I think i'll try going down a size as i do use quite big hooks for rag and i could use a size down.

Thanks alot for the advice tho!

EDIT. oh and i've just bought some forceps, hopefully they will help.

Re: Unhooking Fish

Saul, Try and put the hook at the top end of your bait.
Also try a smaller hook too mate, and lets me know how you get on.

Re: Unhooking Fish

What do you mean by, "put the hook at the top end of your bait". And ye, will use size 2 instead of size 1, discourger should cover it better.

Thanks again,

Saul

Re: Unhooking Fish

Sometimes if a fish has swallowed the hook deep it is better to cut the line and let the fish go with the hook in it.

Yeah, thats what someone told me. But after much thinking I've decide thats just got to be b*ll*cks... How can a fish possibly survive with a hook down its throat, It won't come out, and it won't rust away.

The amount of damage caused by peeps poking around with disgorgers for ages whilst the fish is out of water, is probably worse than leaving the hook in and getting the fish back in the water as soon as possible???
