Barbless?

Hi all,

Im just wondering why all sea fishermen use barbed hooks and all coarse fisherman use barbless, I had a lil bash at coarse fishing, wasn't that impresssed but it was so nice to just be able to slip the hook out. Can we not do the same? I mean I can understand that it is less secure in the fish, but then why do all coarse fisherman use them? Is it just the rules for coarse fishing?

As far as I'm concerned there is no reason to have a barb on a hook except to keep the bait on. Catching a fish requires keeping the pressure on once they are hooked and a barb has no part to play in that.

I haven't used barbs for years and I mainly fish in the sea with lures. I just use a pair of pliers to flatten out the barbs and go for it. Occasionally I lose fish to them rattling the lure out but I don't care. I catch more than enough fish for me.

I think you will find most fisheries Do not use barbless any more because of the untold damage they do to the fish ,
Barbless were brought out so match men could unhook quickly in matches

i think most carp anglers use barbed hooks like my self

well i carp fish and i use barbless and so do all the guys i fish with in fact six fisheries in my area have banned barbed hooks

More damage is caused by barbless
As this is posted in the sea section i do not see the problem with using barbed as i take my fish for the table ,apart from weavers,and doggies
