hermit crabs

im no expert on hermit crabs but this is the way i use them
i use a size 3/0 hook usual with quite a long shank and wide gap, also helps if it has barbs on the shank
never tryed collecting hermit crab so just buy it frozen, if it comes in the shell just shake it out if not all the better, simply thread it up the hook tail 1st all the way up so the hook comes out through the head area(mouth is best) and then wrap with bait elastic, if money is no object some people use 2 at once, simply place the other 1 on top of the 1st head to tail and then wrap on with elastic
hermit is a deadly bait for smuts
hope this helps

Re: hermit crabs

We have gone from hermit crab to peeler!!!

I have only used hermit crab if i have caught one! I maybe wrong but I look on it has a second rate bait and certianly not buy it, let alone buy it frozen.

Whilst the subject of peeler has been mentioned, and this is something I read only a little while ago, few fish go for it because as we know peelers hide when shedding there shells............so fish have never seen them!!

Re: hermit crabs

you are only likely to get smuts n maybe bass on hermit crab due to the fact that normaly they are in shells and they are the only fish with teeth powerfull enough to get through the shells, although if a beach has a good poplutaion of hermit crabs it can be a very good alround bait because as the crabs grow they have to move shells and become easy pickings for all typers of fish
another good use for hermit crab is as a tipping bait, if you use just the soft tail to tip off a worm bait or squid or something it can be very effective for bream, bass, flatties, in fact most things
the fact of the matter is really though if you are gonna use hermit crab you are aiming for smuts
i have had variable succses with peeler crab, i have had black bream and schoal bass on it and thats it, i think it attracts the smaller fish more becaus i always have lots of small bites or miss bites
i find the best way to fish it is with squid on a pennel rig, the 2 hooks means little fish are more likely to get hooked
in my oppion peeler crab is very over rater and very very over priced, i prefer using rag worm (seems to stay on the hook longer too)
