hermit crabs

an old skipper we used to use for our trips, had 3 traps for hermits, which he would collect and empty as we went out to the marks, he used two supermarket hand baskets tied top to top, baited with mackie, left out at sea with a marker buoy.
hermits are deepish water dwellers 30/40 ft. terrific fresh out of the shell, i carry a small hammer to break the shell, they are a good all round bait, if they are around the area that you fish, very good in the solent waters, brilliant for smuts.
