With the black, you felt that it was solid, tough and robust. The red seem toy-ish and fragile, took me a while before I got used to the red and now can't wait to get one. (no offence intended to those who own a red ABU) There' something to be said about the ABU multipliers. Now that I am getting back into fishing, I have gone mad and spend quite a bit on reels. A part from the 5000C that I still owned since I was 10, I recently bought a two 6501C3. One new and another second hand and a 4601C3 and soon a 7001. I had to stop myself as I started to look into the C4's. Must admit they are beautiful, blue and gold. Well not that many multiplier really, but I have hell a lot more fixed spool reels. There is only one brand for fixed spool for me and it is the German made DAM, especially the Quick models which is what I am into and a bit of a collector. |

| Re: Multiplier Reels When I first started beach fishing in the early 70s, I used an Abu 484 rod and a Mitchell 624 reel, the reel was also used for boat fishing too. I gave up for about 30 years and then got back into it again a couple of years ago. I started back with fixed spools but never felt completely comfortable with them. Earlier this year I picked up a 7HT at a car boot for £5 and a few weeks later splashed out on a 525 SuperMag. A few sessions down on the school sports field and I was away with it. I now use a combination of multi & fixed spool, depending on venue and target species, although I tend to use fixed spool at night. The only advice I'd give anyone thinking of a multi for beachcasting is avoid anything with level wind and buy a recognised leader such as Abu mags, Penn SuperMags and Daiwa Millionaire. They may cost more but they are well made, feel superb in the hand and if you find you can't get on with them, you'll have more chance of re-couping your money from a known brand. It seems harsh and even though Okuma are now producing some brilliant reels, they and the likes of DAM, Ron Thompson, Shakespeare etc will always be viewed on the 2nd hand market as being worth about 2 balloons and a goldfish |
