| Homemade Piggy Back Hooks Having read Kevin's post on D Rigs, I thought I'd have a go at showing my home made version of this hook that's on sale. Apologies in advance for my poor photographic skills and if it's been shown before. I realise that being a newish member there's probably very little that more experienced sea anglers haven't seen or tried before but for what it's worth here goes. You need some household pins, cotton, hooks and super glue (I'm using really cheap stuff from Poundland). I've got a fly tying vice and thread holder but I'm sure you can manage without those. ![]() Mount the hook in a vice or other holder. Nip the head off the pin (wire cutters work fine as the pins are really quite soft). Bend the pin to about 45 degrees or more. Then whip the pin on to the back of the hookshank and add a drop of superglue to the whipping. ![]() I then impale my bait on the pin and whip it on with bait elastic. ![]() Mounting the bait on the pin on the back of the hookshank keeps it in place surprisingly well. It doesn't slide down the hook nor does it move inside the bend. It should work well with large baits that might otherwise cover the hookpoint. I've tried it several times at Blue Anchor but only caught Dogfish on it. I console myself by assuming that's all that was in front of me rather than there being a problem with the hook. If you've got nothing more interesting to do on a wet morning you might like to tie a couple to try. __________________ Rich "If a thing's worth doing it's worth doing to excess!" |

| Re: Homemade Piggy Back Hooks Excellent post mate. Never thought of trying the baitholder hooks as I'm sure the extra weld? would weaken the hook, but this seems to bypass that problem. Cheers mate. ![]() __________________ Ollie: "Call me a cab." Stan: "You're a cab." Just another night on the beach with Ping. |
