Cool Re: Beginner in need of serious help!

For the length of the shock leader it tends to be the length of your rod plus about 6 turns on your reel. Use the Allbright knot to secure it to your main line. But I prefer the bimini twist. Its difficult to explain how to tie. So keep it simple and use the allbright knot.

Thumbs up Re: Beginner in need of serious help!

Hi mate you will need to put aprox the length of your rod plus an extra mtr worth of shockleader on your reel to take the strain of casting. When you fill your reel with line try and fill it level with the lip of the spool so it will run and cast smothly. You should also get some traces as i would not advise tying your hooks and weight straight on to your shockleader. Traces can let you change things around if things arn`t working i.e go from two hooks to three or fish at a different depth. These can be attached to your shockleader by tying a loop in the end of the line and then they can be clipped on. As for the float fishing and lure fishing i can`t help you because not really tried it but can tell you if you buy this months copy of sea angler it has got a lot of features on this subject so might help

Good luck you will have to let us all know how ya got on

Re: Beginner in need of serious help!

shock leader blah blah!
this and that etc ect!
the reson you got a telescopic is for ease of travel right!
a bit of fun fishing! think sombody said cast far and get into the big fish
sorry who ever said that but utter rubbish!!!

ok you got the rod now wots sort of reel, bits and bobs
you got from the course fishing days to go with it?
if you alredy have a fixed spool, and some 10lb line
maybe a small dexter lure (cheap) £1.50 or some feathers!
or if you wont to sit it out usual paternoster no4 hook and a squid strip!

some time sea anglers/carp anglers make it sound like brain surgery
by making you think you need this and that to get into fish!!!

its rubbish mate, more important is have you any features like rocks etc!
pontoons?

no offence to anyone but please u recon he wonts to splash out
on aload of gear for a holiday????
likes been said ,10lb line, small fixed spool, a few leads, hooks,
(a pike float maybe) take some of your number 14 hooks for getting the sprats, grab some bait from the local fish market ie, squid mackrel,
and have a good time!

The shock leader needs to protrude from your rod tip ring to attach your end rig to. It should also have 8-10 turns on the reel spool. This not only takes up the shock of casting a heavy lead, but is also useful for pulling heavy fish up peirs or rocks. If fishing from a high place, put a few more turns on your reel. Try this link for how to tie a stop knot.http://www.pacgb.co.uk/tips/stopknot.html

Re: Beginner in need of serious help!

Hi, thanks for all the help so far. I understand most of it now but there are a few parts or peices of tackle that i do not know about yet. What is a bait clip and a clipdown? Also what about the size of hooks, i know about sizes in coarse fishing but they seem to be different in sea fishing? And lastly what about beads and sequins, are they needed? do they work?

Thanks again everyone for all your help.

Any tackle shop should be able to advise on hook sizes. Just let them know what species you are trying for or ask them what you are likely to catch locally. A clip down rig is just a way of holding your bait in place when casting long distances. Hope this helps mate. http://gemini-tackle.co.uk/rigs.html
