Re: What to Buy?

I'm affraid its a minefield out there as you can imagine, but if he's going for wreck Pollock then a 20lb-30lb class rod should do the business.
If on the other hand he's after wreck Conger then go a bit heavier, say a 50lb class.
If he's after Plaice in shallow water then a 12lb-15lb class will do.
There are many different brand names out there but they all use the same lb class rateing.
Names to look out for are:
Diawa
Penn
Abu
Shimano

Steer clear of the cheeper rods as these wont last two minutes.
You want to pay about £50 and upwards for a half descent boat rod.

see pic below for a sample of what reels would suit for various classes
This for 50lb class-wreck Conger-Shimano TLD 25

This for wreck Pollocking 15lb-20lb class-DIAWA SL30SH

As above..Pollocking-ABU 7000

And this for long range beach casting or boat fishing for Plaice, although to be honest its a little light for on the boat.ABU 6500 RANGE

Hope this has helped.
Regards
Nigel.

Talking Re: What to Buy?

12-20 lb class rod or 30lb class rod, with reel to suit, if your budget allows, buy him an Abu 7000 level wind get them to put braid on. or you could buy it from braid direct very good prices and excellent quality.

Put these together and he'll be washing up and decorating without being asked
for ages!

Unhappy Re: What to Buy?

Put a bid of up to £25 on ebay for an Abu 6500 Rocket! From what I can tell though these and similiar mulitpliers are about £100 usually so if I get it I've won a watch!I also put on £35 bid for a Shimano Aerlex. I'm looking at bidding on a Daiwa-Cormoran 7ft Seacor Roller Boat Rod 30lb class starting at £30 I'm gonna bid £40 good value?

Understand these are Tiawanese made. The popular Abu 7000 made in Sweden is red about £100 in discount dealers and lucky to get a new one for £80 on Ebay . Cheaper 2ndhand ones on ebay sometimes.

I thought they were lovely piccies - you're real good with camera; what make/model is it?

Your pics including a Swedish red abu 7000 are great but I think it is a bit confusing of Abu in making a red Abu 7000 and an Abu seven 7000 which is so much cheaper but black and I understand Tiawanese.

Keep taking the pics. Lucky they're colour piccies or we wouldn't have known the reel difference

Unhappy Re: What to Buy?

Ooooh gawd! Well I don't know where to put my face now and should probably slink off and not show it on the forum again. As a sea fishin purchaser virgin I was unsure if the different colour of the reels was relevant which is why I asked. Wouldn't want to be ripped off and taken advantage off because of my naivete. I very much appreciated Pixybasher's photos but since I can only get on to the site at home when my hubby ain't in ( as it is a suprise) I'm not on so much. Also due to being a hard working mum ( housework and kids during the day and busy call centre to run at night) I have to buy it online. I am trying to get a good deal coz hubby is a bit mean and if it costs too much he won't enjoy it. I'm sorry if I was taking advantage of your good nature and will endeavour not to do so again. Thankyou for everybody's help it is very much appreciated. It will help patch a 12 year old marriage that is wearing at the edges. x

Re: What to Buy?

Go for the red 7000, if its going to be used with braid stay away from rods with rollers,
unless they state they're for braid.
