Cheap Hooks

I found these hooks on ebay and was wondering if anyone had tried them and whether it was worth buying them. I think they are fladen war bird Aberdeen hooks.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/200-ABERDEEN-H...item2c4c27dd2e

I am quite new to fishing and have only brought a couple of packs of hooks which I have paid about £3.50 for 25 mustad blues which is 14p a hook compared to £8 for 200 which is 4p a hook for the cheapies. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jason

Re: Cheap Hooks

As a coarse angler Id say never compromise on your hooks, you can really tell the difference between cheap and good hooks in terms of sharpenss, not sure if this will apply to sea fishing, but you can always try them for that price

Re: Cheap Hooks

If you plan to fish in the sea then its forged hooks only, buy too cheap and you'll loose the fish, the hook will bend or snap with a good size fish on unless they're forged.
Tight lines.

Re: Cheap Hooks

I think hook 'pattern' is just as important . and aberdeen is a good all round fine wire hook but not suitable for the larger species such as rays or huss for example - this includes winter fishing for cod or large bass..
Another thing just as important is the bait you are using. Again , an aberdeen is no use for crab or fish baits but fine for small rag and lugworm.
The question then , is what to go for as a 'general' purpose hook..
My personal choice would be go for a minimum of 2 types .. a small black aberdeen size 2 or my personal choice - the 'saltwater champion' hook from veals mail order or the mustad power point worm 34042BR. you will then want a larger gaped hook of a thicker wire for mounting fish baits etc so something around the 3/0 size in a thicker wire is best.
Just as a point of interest i used to buy hooks by the 5,000 when i sold them online and the 'cheap' aberdeens you find ALL come from south east Asia .. they are mass produced so in a box of 50 you may find 5 with dodgy eyes,5 with odd shapes and another 5 with no point.. then find 50 that are all fine ..
Looking through an old trade catalogue its intersting to note that the mark up on mustad hooks is a standard 100% so it's no surprise that a fair few anglers head towards economy hooks .
A good friend and old fishing partner of mine Mike Taylor runs a company called U.K Hooks ( now based on the Isle of White ) and stocks an amazing range of hooks from the cheap and cheerful to top of the range Eagle Claw hooks from the U.S. ..

Re: Cheap Hooks

When i bought some of those cheap hooks off ebay, they either snapped or went blunt.
Its not really worth it in the end
