Question how do you fish with plugs /jelly eels

could someone please explain the way to fish with lures, ie what is the most suitable breaking strain of line? Do I put a lead weight somewhere to aid casting, if so where? Is it the same for eels. I have only done ledgering and am lost now as to spining. I havea masterline prs100 10' rod to use.
Thanks.

Well are you using the lures form the beach or from a boat?
I will take it you will be using them from the shore

I always use 15lb myself as its going to be a big fish to break it ( fishing from the shore )

When using a lure you should not have to as they are weighted
Before you buy one have a read of the packaging that it comes in and it will be on the back . It will say its weight in grams if its diving, sinking or surface lure

Diving = This will have a plastic duck like bill on the front and this forces the lure to dive quickly whilst you reel in
Sinking = Come in different types i.e fast sinking mid water ect these are normally the heavier of the lure world and you vary the depth by the speed you reel in ( the slower the deeper the lure will work at )
Surface Lures = They are floating lures that will " float on the surface " . They are great for working shall water or over kelp beds as the normally work at a depth of 6" to a foot below the surface

What I find is to get into the swing of using lures is to find some water (snag free ) and just pop the lure out 10 feet and keep bring in and out . Whilst doing this vary the speed at which you reel in and the angle of your rod

As you can see the lure you will soon see what speed is best (You are looking at a fish in distress)

Lure fishing is great fun, and when a fish hits it can send the old heart racing

Little tips
  • Make sure you clutch is set on your reel
  • Fish can be caught at your feet so work the lure all the way in
  • Flatten the two of the three barbs on the trebles (helps unhooking and I have never had a problem with loosing fish)
  • Check your trebles and split rings as they will rust over time
  • Buy a lure which you think will catch fish and not a lure that will catch anglers
Hope this make some sense and I m sure that others will chip in

Please asks any question you like mate and

I've been wondering about spinning too. Do you just attach a swivel to you main line then a shortish hooklength (length?) then the lure or do you need anti'kink vanes and other bits? I've got some "flying condoms" to try on the bass this year and a nice new lightweight rod to add to the sport!

If you have a look at the Rapala website you will see there are some special knot's you can tie. I hate sending peeps off the forum site but until I can get hold of autoCAD I cant draw them the way I would like too. Knots are also I nightmare to try and discribe.
