Shore fishing with carp gear.

Next time I go out sea fishing I'm thinking of taking my lighter carp gear with me too see if I can get a bit of a fight out of pin whiting (is it possible )

Anyway, my rod is 12ft long with a 2 1/2lb test curve. The reel I'd use would be my baitrunner which at the moment is loaded with roughly 180 yards of 12lb line.

I'd probaly use a 2 hook paternoster, but what sort of weight would I need do you think? And would I need a shockleader for dealing with the heavier weights?

Thanks for any tips..

Re: Shore fishing with carp gear.

i would definately use a shock-leader dan,i don't think a pin whiting would give you much sport,a nice channel whiting would be much better,

i have used my carp gear often in the summer when after mackies, garfish etc but i havn't thought about using it in the winter, perhaps the prospect of a codling getting hold of the other end put me off.

Re: Shore fishing with carp gear.

Got bought a Shakespeare Targa 2.5 lb carp rod and baitrunner for Christmas which I intend to use for float and spinning in the sea over the summer. I reckon it should cast 3oz reasonably easily. I think Smoothy was using a carp rod for flounder at Barnstaple with a 2 or 3 oz lead.

Hi Pross,

I was using 2 Penn Bass rods 2-4ozs plus Shimano Baitrunner reels.

I use them for float and estuary fishing.

Re: Shore fishing with carp gear.

I will aways use my carp rod if I can get away with it. As I do not see the piont of using a beach caster that is designed for a 4-8oz lead when you are fishing with 1-3oz lead

Carp rods are built to handle fish 20lb plus so with my current run of luck on the beach front they will handle anything Im going to catch

Thanks for all your replies.

But I'm still not sure what lb line shockleader to put on... if i were using a 3oz lead, would it be 30lb?

It depends on how far you are going to cast the lead, 10-20 yards with a gentle lob, then no point in a shock leader for 3 ozs. But If you are going to go for a bit of distance with an overhead thump, then 30-40lb shock leader is required. Better to be safe than sorry.

I intend to use them for Surf fishing and Rock Hopping for Bass and Smothounds.

They are light and can cast a 4 oz lead to the horizon, casts a cigar float to the Buoy at Brixham with an under arm swing! Plus they do several other jobs like estuary fishing very well, and most importantly they have very sensitive bite detection in the tip section.

So one rod does a lot more...if you like.

But at the end of the day its your preference that counts and if you don't have a budget use your Carp gear. But not for Heavy beach casting. Maybe you could "Spod" for Smoothounds

Re: Shore fishing with carp gear.

hi dan

i use carp gear on the beach in the summer all the time for bass.
i use baitrunners shimano 6010 (i think)
i just use 30lb braid straight thru

but with 12 lb line i would use something like a 30lb leader

great sport from whiting to a 1lb from the local piers when i can drag meself away from chasing cod :O)

even had a 5lb thornie on carp gear last summer while after bass

what a fight !!

mack
