Catching fish from a balloon

Hello guys,

I'm trying to build a setup to fish in the sea out of balloon. I'll be flying at about 6km height and I want to prepare my own meal up in the sky, starting from scratch gathering all the ingredients myself as a kind of survival challenge.

I can grow plants and herbs up there for ingredients, but the biggest challenge is to catch a fish. I know it sounds a bit far fetched, but I'm hoping you can help me in the right direction as to what I should think about, which changes I need to make to my gear and so on.

I'm quite good at building things, so I wouldn't mind building a rig from scratch. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

All the best,
Harry

Re: Catching fish from a balloon

The biggest reel you can find that will hold at least 500 feet of line, a 30 foot rod with stableizers fitted, very very long shockleader, a size 20 hook, a 500lb griplead and a whole tuna= Fish on. Mate you need wind for your balloon to move ive heard of drift fishing but you wud need all the above unless you could hover say 5 foot of the top off the water. Good luck and for godsake do not call richard bransen. When and if you catch a fish lol how do you plan to land it anyway i admire a trier thats for sure:eusa_ thin just realised your nuts mate lol. Prove me wrong I cant believe im replying to this glad im irish. Chow

LOL, you don't even get seagulls at 16-18000ft. His best chance of catching a fish is if I get a BA pilot friend of mine to throw one to him as he whizzes past!

All joking aside welcome to the forum. Think of the weather mate, dont do it in dec/jan time after the weather weve had i couldnt imagine you 16000 feet up, although you could give us the weather report as you will be the first person to see it. I will dream about this tonight i just know i will, spinning from a balloon and catching. I do wish you well in your conquest.

Re: Catching fish from a balloon

you could always go after flying fish mate, or failing that , if you've seen the HSBC advert then borrow that Chinese Guys Cormorant to dive off the balloon-catch said fish and then fly it back up to you !

I would imagine throwing an anchor over to slow down the drift isnt an option

Re: Catching fish from a balloon

Picture the scene, you've cranked a decent table sized bass all the way up to your ballon and it flips of the hook with a metre below. Mind you at the altitude you mention would it not be frozen?
There is an idea here, in a steampunk knda way. But I think descending quite a way for a fishing trip would be in order.

Re: Catching fish from a balloon

Yeah but hes gonna have a garden up there to grow herbs & stuff @ 6km fullcreel. Just thinking wouldn't it be easier to have a garden pond in the garden so you can grow your own fish to eat??no....no...no silly me we're into the realms of fantasy now aren't we?good luck mate & welcome to the forums, love to see a picture of your final rig by the way.
